It is the flagship publication of the Philadelphia-based Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI), an international affairs think tank established in 1955.
FPRI founder Robert Strausz-Hupé created Orbis in response to his dissatisfaction with the Council on Foreign Relations' Foreign Affairs, in which he never published an article.[1] Strausz-Hupé edited the journal himself from its first issue in 1957 until 1969[2], when he left FPRI to begin a diplomatic career, handing the reins to William R. Kintner.
The journal is presently edited by Mackubin Thomas Owens, an American military historian. Recent editors include James Kurth (2005–7), David Eisenhower (2001–04), and Walter A. McDougall (1995–2001).[3]
Elsevier Science prints and distributes Orbis on behalf of FPRI. Selected articles and issue indices are also made available on the journal's website.
