Political career

Ong first stepped into the Singapore political arena in the Singapore 2011 General Election contesting as a candidate in the hottest district Aljunied GRC representing the People's Action Party as part of a 5-man team which included team leader ex-Minister George Yong-Boon Yeo, ex-Minister of State Lim Hwee Hua, Cynthia Phua and Zainul Abidin Bin Mohamed Rasheed. The incumbent PAP team faced heavy competition from Team-A of the Workers' Party which was led by veteran non-ruling parties leader party-Secretary General cum MP Low Thia Khiang together with ex-NCMP Sylvia Lim Swee Lian, Dr Chen Show Mao, Muhamad Faisal bin Abdul Manap and Pritam Singh. The PAP team could only garner 45.28%[2] of the total votes this time and lost a GRC for the first time in history to their Workers' Party peers. Thus Ong failed in his first quest to enter the Parliament of Singapore despite being tipped as a potential office holder.[3]
