OnTrac is a regional parcel carrier that serves the seven largest states in the Western U.S. OnTrac started as a small package delivery company in California in 1991, and has expanded^[1] to serve six additional states: Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Utah and Colorado. A majority of their initial customers were document shippers such as law firms, financial institutions and architects that needed overnight delivery in California that could not be cost-effectively^[2] delivered with the national carriers. Over the years, OnTrac has expanded their business offerings to include large volume parcel distributors and Internet retailers. Their current service area^[3] serves nearly 60 million consumers, or almost 20% of the United States population.^[4] OnTrac is a privately held company, and as such, the company stock is not publicly traded. OnTrac holds both intrastate and interstate operating authority.

Divisions

OnTrac owns and operates three divisions of delivery and courier services.

Overnight Division

The Overnight Division of OnTrac operates in the seven largest states in the Western U.S.: California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Utah and Colorado. The Overnight division of OnTrac provides priority, express, and ground parcel deliveries.^[5]

Services

• OnTrac Ground Service launched on August 1, 2011,^[6] and offers next-day and two-day ground shipping to its customers. This service is guaranteed by the end of the day.^[7]

• Sunrise Service is offered by OnTrac, which guarantees 10:30 am next business day delivery, and 2:00 pm Saturday delivery to many areas.^[7]

• Sunrise Gold Service is offered by OnTrac, and guarantees 8:00 am next business day delivery, and delivery by noon on Saturdays.^[7]

• OnTrac also ships and delivers palletized freight. Most shipments in its coverage area are delivered next-day and are guaranteed by the end of the next business day in those areas.^[7]

OnTrac Messenger

The Messenger Division of OnTrac is operated in 15 different states within the United States: Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and most recently, California.^[8] The Messenger Division of OnTrac provides same day and next-day messenger services.^[9] In select areas, the Messenger division also specializes in customized supply chain solutions, reducing operating expenses while improving service quality.

International Mail

OnTrac also operates an international mail service, known as Express Messenger International.^[10] The International Mail division gives customers a direct gateway to cost-effective international postal services.

Money-Back Service Guarantee

OnTrac offers a Money-Back Service Guarantee^[11] that allows its customers to recoup their shipping expenses, in the event of a service failure.

Green Initiatives

OnTrac has initiated several programs in order to become more environmentally friendly. These include: optimized driver routes for reduced emissions, paperless billing and reporting, a company cell phone recycling program, a trip reduction and carpool reward program, a corporate-wide paper and document recycling program, as well as a shipping material recycling program.^[12] These programs have been implemented due to the recent growth of environmental awareness.

Drop Box Program

OnTrac offers conveniently-located drop boxes within its service area.^[13] These boxes are for existing customers, and allow them to drop off their package for pick up as late as 10:00pm in some areas. Use of the drop boxes allows customers to avoid paying a pick-up fee. OnTrac has nearly 1,100 drop boxes throughout its service area. These can be located on their website.[22]

Rebranding & Growth

In February 2008,^[14] California Overnight changed its name to OnTrac to accommodate the expanding delivery footprint of the company. Since its beginning, the company has realized significant growth, largely due to the growth of the online retailer industry. The demand for a lower-cost delivery service with a level of professionalism has increased the growth of several other regional parcel delivery companies that include: Spee-Dee Delivery Service, Eastern Connection, and Lone Star Overnight.

Addition of Colorado

On September 1, 2011, OnTrac added the major metropolitan areas of Colorado to its Overnight Division’s service area. This grew the Overnight Division to seven states, and adds 3,641,453 people to its service area.^[15][16]

Multi-Carrier Shipping Software Providers

OnTrac partners with many multi-carrier software providers including: Pitney Bowes, Kewill,^[17] CMS GlobalSoft,^[18] Digital Shipper,^[19] Malvern Systems.^[20] ADSI, Agile Network, Descartes, Enroute Systems Corporation, Logicor, MEI Distribution, Pro Ship, Process Weaver, V-Technologies, and Varsity Logistics.^[21]
