Old College is the undergraduate seminary for the Indiana Province of the Congregation of Holy Cross Priests. Located on the campus of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, the program is housed in the oldest building on campus, constructed in 1843.
Old College is open to any undergraduate man who is focused on discerning a call to the religious life, while at the same time working to obtain an undergraduate degree. For these men, the Old College seminary serves as both a house of residence and a way of life. The community combines a structured formation program with the advantages of a Notre Dame educational experience.
The men of Old College work very closely with the Holy Cross priests and graduate seminarians at Moreau Seminary, which is on the north side of campus. Joint activities between the two programs include on-campus events such as leading the annual Eucharistic Procession, having community dinners, and serving together at Mass; they also collaborate in off-campus activities such as the annual March for Life and the Mundelein Seminary basketball tournament. Because Moreau Seminary is the next step in formation for Old Collegians, these events play an important role in building brotherhood among the Holy Cross seminarians.
Formation and Academics
Old Collegians are introduced to religious life in Holy Cross through daily Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Hours, spiritual direction, service placements, retreats, one-on-one meetings with their chaplains, and weekly community gatherings. Their academic requirements include 18 credits of philosophy and 12 of theology, but they are free to pursue various degrees, depending upon their academic interests.
