Howard Hall is one of the 27 Residence Halls on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and one of 13 female dorms. Howard Hall is located near South Dining Hall on University of Notre Dame's Southernmost quad, and is immediately surrounded by Badin Hall on the east, Morrissey Manor on the west, and Bond Hall on the north.

History

Howard Hall is one of the oldest buildings on the campus of Notre Dame, and is in many ways a trailblazer. Constructed in 1924, Howard Hall was the first instance of a Notre Dame building being built in the collegiate Gothic style, and was also the first building to be named after a lay person -- Notre Dame Professor and Indiana Supreme Court Justice Timothy Howard. The dorm was converted from a male to a female residence hall in 1987, at which point the dorm took on the now-familiar Duck as its mascot.

Notable alumni include Jack Swarbrick, current Athletic Director at Notre Dame, and Bill Dwyre, sports editor for the Los Angeles Times.

Although it is one of the smallest dorms on campus, Howard Hall has a number of signature events throughout the year. Among these events are the Howard Hoedown (a fall dance), an annual bone marrow drive, and a campus-wide marshmallow roast to celebrate the first snowfall of the year.

Distinguishing features

Howard Hall is probably best known for its quaint double archway that separates the first floor into two sections and passes under the upper three floors of the hall. Adorning these arches and the other main entrances to Howard are a number of gargoyle-type stone carvings depicting anything from an owl to student who has just received a less-than-stellar report card. To the west, the archway is adorned with a statue of Saint Timothy. The actual rooms in Howard are many and varied; Howard offers rooms that range in size from 1 to 5 residents. The residence hall also includes several common areas, a kitchen, a laundry room, and a recently renovated chapel. The chapel features a pieta by sculptor Jean de Marco.

Howard Hall offers one of the most diverse room options on campus. Half of the rooms are singles, and the remaining rooms include: doubles, triples, 2-person suites, 3-person suites, 4-person suites, and 5-person suites.

Howard Hall also has a tradition of referring to male students of the University who frequent the hall as "Mallards". The wit of this clever play on the word "male" and the mascot of Howard Hall is often underappreciated by those to whom the moniker is applied.

The current rector of Howard Hall is Sr. Katherine Collard.
