History

North Pacific 43 ft. Pilothouse

North Pacific Yachts was founded in January 2004 by John and Trevor Brice after they designed the North Pacific 43. The original yacht was built in China and delivered for the Boats Afloat Show in Seattle in 2004. The company has received orders for over 75 yachts and has delivered more than 65. They now offer four models from 28 to 43 feet and hope to expand their product line.

Trevor Brice is the son of John Brice, a China trade expert and entrepreneur from Vancouver, British Columbia. John Brice has dealt with manufacturing in Asia for over 35 years. In 1984 he founded a low-cost high-volume business called Quality Craft Ltd. which has 10 offices and 70 employees throughout North America and China. Quality Craft Ltd. supplies hundreds of retailers with a range of over 800 different products. John has imported products worth billions of dollars and has experience dealing with manufacturers. John still spends the majority of his time in Asia developing his China offices and new products.

Trevor Brice has been boating since he was 6 weeks old. After high school he also earned his Commercial Pilots License with a Multi-Engine Instrument rating. He completed a business degree while learning to fly. At that time he decided he didn't want to fly for a living, so he decided to start a business building the 43' Pilothouse which he and his father had designed for their family. Financing was provided by his father who made himself available for advice in running his new company.

The North Pacific 43′ Pilothouse is a stout fiberglass trawler built on the original CHB 38 hull. The Brices located a naval architect who turned their ideas into construction drawings and CAD files, as well as to ensure seaworthiness and stability. The overriding philosophy was that all systems should be easy to access and maintain. Things like wiring are numbered and color-coded, and accessible through hinged service panels.

Value comes from remarkably low prices which is a direct result of experienced, lower-cost Chinese shipbuilding. The low cost of the yachts is maintained by having a nearly zero-overhead sales and marketing operation. There are no commissioned sales people, no expensive boat show displays or exhibits and well-focused advertising. The company maintains a commissioning and servicing company in Oak Harbor, Washington.

Yacht models

North Pacific 43 ft. Pilothouse trawler underway

North Pacific currently produces 4 models. The North Pacific 43 Pilothouse is a stout fiberglass trawler built on the original CHB 38 hull. The 43 Pilothouse cruises at 8- 10 knots produced by the yacht's 230 hp Cummins diesel, with twin engines available. Based largely on the success of the North Pacific 43 and the need for a smaller, more affordable pilothouse North Pacific Yachts decided to produce the North Pacific 39 Pilothouse. Starting in the Spring of 2009 a new North Pacific 38 will be available with a single or optional two stateroom layout. The North Pacific 38 Sedan is based on the same proven hull as the North Pacific 43. The 38 ft. Sedan has the classic look of a traditional trawler with walk-around decks. They have recently added the North Pacific 28 Pilothouse trailerable pocket trawler with an 8.5 ft. beam, suitable for transportation to and from the water by their owners without a permit. The design for their new 28 footer came from Chesapeake Marine Design and was created by Karl Stambaugh. The design fit in well with the North Pacific fleet as well as with a growing demand for this type of boat and this particular design. North Pacific Yachts worked with Karl who modified the hull, adding stability and speed to the existing design. After months of planning and several minor design changes mold production began. The first North Pacific 28 is scheduled for delivery in August 2009.

"We are able to realize our vision of quality and offer the North Pacific 43 at an unbeatable price because we invested in, and formed a joint venture project with a well-respected boat manufacturer in China which originally built boats in Taiwan. The factory is modern and is able to employ the best manufacturing techniques (all yachts are built to meet ABYC standards), while at the same time can draw on an extensive skilled labor force when the job is better suited to more traditional hand crafted techniques. A combined 60 years of boat building experience between the investors in the factory and our 27 years of boating experience in the Pacific Northwest, enables us to build a quality yacht suited to make even the worst cruising conditions comfortable."[1]

Yacht manufacturing

North Pacific Yachts are built by Ningbo Fuhua Boat Building in Ningbo, China.

Ningbo Fuhua Boat Building Industry Co., Ltd. is a joint venture, which was founded on the base of Ningbo Fuhai Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastics Boat Manufacturing Co., Ltd. The company produces a variety of yachts.

The factory is located in Chaiqiao Town, Beilun District of Ningbo City, near the Beilun and Zhenhai Ports and has easy access to shipping transportation. The company has an area of 16,000m2 including production facilities of 10,000 m2 and rich experience in the design and construction of a large number of vessels.

The manufacturer employs over one hundred and eighty experienced specialists, designers and skilled workers. It designs and manufactures various types of boats. The company builds ten types of motor yachts, i.e., 34’sedan、34’double cabin、36’sedan,36’ double cabin、40’sedan、37’PH、42’PH、37’fishing boat、42’ fishing boat and 60’. In addition to these models, various boats are built according to customers’ requests. Since 1967 they have built over 3000 boats, so have a large body of experience in yacht construction. These are not all produced for North Pacific Yachts.

Now most of Fuhua’s high quality vessels are exported to America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.[2]

The yachts are built to ABYC standards and use modern materials such as vinylester resin, NIDA core, stainless steel 316 railings and fitting, and tinned wiring. The interiors are finished with real teak by skilled craftsmen and are well equipped with extensive standard equipment. They are designed to provide maximum useful living and storage space. Brand name equipment is used throughout, including Cummins, Hurth, Northern Lights, Morse, Hynautic, Vetus, Princess, Norcold, Tecma, American Standard, Shurflo, Blue Sea, Lewmar, Perko, and Force 10. The customer usually only needs to add electronics.

Hulls have three layers of Micron Extra outside of two coats of Micron Epoxy. The two layers of composite are laid up with vinylester resin for blisterproofing and the rest includes hand-laid layers of cloth, matting, and roving. Below the waterline the hull is at least one inch thick, and about one-half inch above the waterline. The deck is also hand-laid and features Nida-Core for stiffness and lightweight construction.
