The Broad-bordered White Underwing (Hadula melanopa) is a moth of the Noctuidae family. Subspecies melanopa is found in northern Scandinavia. Subspecies rupestralis is found in the Alps, the Balkan mountains and the Apennine Mountains. Subspecies brunnea is found in mountainous areas of Great Britain and ssp. koizumidakeana in Japan.
Alpine form Hadula melanopa rupestralis
The wingspan of subspecies melanopa is 20-26 mm, ssp. brunnea has a wingspan of 25-29 mm. Adults are on wing from June to August in one generation.
The larvae feed on various plants, including Empetrum, Vaccinium, Dryas octopetala and low growing Salix species.
