Nikolai Genov

Nikolai Genov (Bulgarian: Николай Генов/Nikolaj Genow; * 1946) is a Bulgarian sociologist and since 2002 professor for sociology at the Eastern Europe Institute / Institute of Sociology at the Free University of Berlin. He received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Leipzig in 1975 and a Sc.D. degree from the National Academy of Sciences in Sofia (Bulgaria) in 1986.

The focus of his research includes sociological theory, global trends and regional developments, transformation of societies, inter-ethnic relations and international migration. Before his appointment in Berlin, he worked from 1976 until 2002 at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia. From 1978 to 1979 he was a DAAD-fellow at universities in Kassel, Bielefeld and Berlin. He was also an ACLS-fellow at the University of California in Berkeley from 1988 to 1989. Furthermore he conducted research and taught in Moscow, Seoul, Berlin, Rome, Warsaw, Frankfurt am Main and Lund.

From 1994 to 1996 Genov was vice-president of UNESCO's Management of Social Transformations (MOST) program and from 2003 to 2008 he was a member of the advisory board on strategy of that program. From 1998 to 2002 he was holding the position of vice-president of the International Social Science Council (ISSC, Paris) and since 2000 he is Director of the UNESCO/ISSC International Summer School Comparative Research in the Social Sciences. Until his appointment in Berlin he was an adviser to Bulgaria's president Georgi Parvanov.

Nikolai Genov is an author with more than 280 scientific articles and books, that were published in 26 countries.
