The New Zealand 5 Dollar banknote was issued on May 3, 1999. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand issued the note because the note will last four times longer than its counterpart, the paper banknote. The Bank also said the notes are non-porous meaning they don't absorb liquids, there fore they are much cleaner. The notes have much better features than the paper notes which also deters counterfeiters.[2]

Statistics

Sir Edmund Hillary is one of the first non-royal or living heads of state on any currency in the world.[3]

Design

On the front of the note is the explorer Sir Edmund Hillary. Aoraki / Mount Cook, the tallest mountain in New Zealand, can be seen to the left of the bill. Hillary was the first to climb Mount Everest and to drive across the South Pole. The Massey Ferguson tractor driven by Hillary to the pole can be found in the lower left corner next to the see through window.

On the back of the bill is a scene from Campbell Island which is NW of Stewart Island / Rakiura. The penguin on the bill is the Hoiho, which is native to New Zealand.[4]

Security Features

The polymer note has a watermark of Elizabeth II on the right side. There is two transparent windows of a fern on the left and one on the right. When held up to the light the window will show a 5 in the center of the window. Above the fern window there is a fern printed on both side when you hold it up to the light the two ferns will match up perfectly. When the note is put under UV Light a yellow patch should appear with the number 5 with the use of fluorescent dyes.[5]
