Career
Neri’s passion for leather and design started when she was very young and used to watch her saddle maker grandfather and seamstress grandmother working. Years later, after pursuing a Business Management degree in the United States, Neri headed back to Istambul and, alongside her father, she co-founded her own brand of luxury leather accessories.[3]
The business started small, in 1999, making leather mobile phone cases. As a start-up, Neri Karra, who was only 22 years old, had very limited resources and, instead of developing a whole range of products, she focused on producing one or two models, whose quality would create good brand awareness among consumers.[4]
In her first international venture, Neri started to export to Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Today, Neri Karra’s wide range of leather products can be found in more than 300 stores, in 14 countries.[5]
Over the last decade, she has been awarded an array of accolades and awards from organisations like DSD Foreign Trade that recognises her as one of the largest exporters in Turkey. In 2010, she was also the Finalist at Luxuria Awards for Best Young Entrepreneur[6].
Academic Life
Neri is respected academically for her research and her teaching in renowned institutes, such as London School of Economics, London College of Fashion, and Imperial College Business School[7].
Neri holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, where she was granted with the Trust Overseas Scholarship. Her doctoral thesis was nominated for the prestigious William H Newman Award [8] and was a finalist for Best Paper in International Management at the Academy of Management[9].
In 2006, Neri was invited to be a lecturer and researcher at London College of Fashion. She also tutored International Marketing at University of Cambridge.
During 2008 and 2009, Neri managed the Designing Demand programme at Design London, an international centre for innovation created by Imperial College Business School and Royal College of Art. In the following year, Neri Karra directed the Luxury Brand Management programme at Regent’s College.
