' Nalleppilly' is a village in Palakkad district in the state of Kerala, India.[1] Palakkad is 17 km towards west and Chittur is 5 km away. Nearby places include Walayar to the north, Kozhinjampara to the east and Muthalamada to the south. Coimbatore Airport is the closest airport. Palakkad Junction Railway Station is the nearest railhead. Kollengode Railway Station on the Palakkad-Madurai meter gauge line is another railhead nearby.[citation needed] The postal pincode is 678553 .

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Nalleppilly had a population of 13839 with 6704 males and 7135 females.[1] It was part of Cochin state before independence. Originally it was ruled by Palakkad Raja. when Palakkad was attacked by Kongunadu Raja, Raja of Palakkad defeated him with the help of Raja of Cochin . As mark of gratitude , Raja of Palakkad gave the socalled 'Nalu Desams - four places namely Nallepilly,Chittur , Tattamangalam and Pattencheri. There isa festival called 'Konganpada' meaning battle against people from the east, celebrated even today in Chittur Bhagavathi shetram, temple dedicated to Goddess Durga commemorating this incident . It is believed that invaders could be dispelled with the help of Goddess popularly known as 'Citturamma'. Chitturamma is the family deity of the people of the locality The term' Nalleppilly' came from the Malayalam word' Nalla palli', meaning' nice place'. It comes under Chittur Assembly constituency. It lies on the Covai-Trichur and Pollachi-Palakkad bus route. Palakkad Railway station is just 20 km away and Covai Airport, which is 60 km away is the nearest air port. It has easy access to towns and industrial centres such as Palakkad, Trichur, covai,Pllachi and other places.. It is a small ,but developed villiage in terms of cleanliness and hygiene . There is a very good pipe- water supply system in this place. There is rich vegetation all around. It is predominantly an agricultural area , being a part of Palakkad District which is called the 'Rice bowl of Kerala'. There are temples like Chondath Sivakshetram and Chunagibhagavathi Temple, Ankarath Vishnu Temple, Athikkat Mariamman Temple at Arandapallam, a suburb of Nalleppilly ,Navaneetakrishn Temple in Agraharam , Subramanya temple and Ganapathi temple . In Nair houses , one finds 'surpa kavu', where granite idols of epic serpent kings are worshipped. . Apart from house hold festivals like Thiruvonum , Vishu , Thiruvathira , Saraswathi puja and so on many temple festivals like Koothu ,Arattu and uriyadi,AyyappanVelakku, prior to pilgrimage to Sabharimala which is very popular, Mariamman puja and Shoorasamharam (based on the Epic Skandapurana) are celebrated with pomp and gaiety .
