Mpanga Power Station is an 18 MW mini hydroelectric power project located across River Mpanga, in Kitagwenda County, Kamwenge District, in Western Uganda.

Location

The power station is located across River Mpanga, in Kitagwenda County, Kamwenge District, approximately 28 kilometres (17 mi), by road, southwest of Kamwenge, where the district headquarters are located.[1] This location is approximately 305 kilometres (190 mi), by road, west of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city.[2] The approximate coordinates of Mpanga Power Station are:00 04 52N, 30 22 52E (Latitude:0.0810; Longitude:30.3810). The coordinates are approximate because the power station does not yet appear on most publicly available maps.

Overview

Mpanga Power Station is situated at the location of Mpanga Falls, on Mpanga River. The 18.0 MW power station is being developed by Africa Energy Management Systems. Construction began in 2008.[3] The completed power station is expected to come online in 2011.[4] A new 33kV transmission line will connect the power station to the national electrical grid.[5]

As of February 2011, construction of the power station is complete. Technical commissioning is scheduled for Thursday 10 February 2011, while the public commissioning is scheduled for March 2011. [6] Construction of the power station was undertaken by a Sri Lankan hydropower construction company called VSHydro (Private) Limited[7], at an estimated cost of US$26 million.[8]
