Geography and history
The village is located on a hill above the Ladon dam which brings the powerful beauty of Gortynia. Visitors can tour the area of the lake. The lake is used for swimming, sailing, fishing and boat uses. 5 km from the village in a beautiful locality on the banks of the river has organized sectors of alternative tourism which includes bow and arrow, mountain biking, swimming, canoeing and kayak. The river and the lake are filled with many different fishes. One of the interests in Gortynia is the Ladon (Hydroelectric) Dam which built on a slope of Afrodissio mountains. It has 50,000,000 cubic meters of water in the whole annuel electric production is 350,000,000 kwh. and powers electricity in most of the Peloponnese including Arcadia, Messinia, Ilia, Korinthia and Argolis. Two other dam projects are uncertain that electricity will be reduced to the central and the southern Peloponnese.
After World War II and the Greek Civil War, its buildings were rebuilt and emigration occurred at a higher rate until the 1980s. Mouria became connected with asphalt in the 1970s. Electricity, radio and automobiles were introduced in the mid-20th century, television in the late-20th century and computer and internet at the turn of the millennium. In 1997, the ex-community (now a village and a municipal district) joined to become the newly formed municipality of North Kynouria. A great population loss occurred between 1991 and the 2000s.
