Mount Bohemia is a mountain located in Oregon's portion of the Cascades Range, with its summit having an elevation of 5,840 feet (1,780 m). The mountain, lying in the Umpqua National Forest, sports a trail[3] which traverses the mountain, leading up to the summit, giving hikers a view of the area near the mountain. Just east of where the trail ends, due to Bohemia Mountain's location, there is a spot where, according to the website Eugene Outdoors, one can see Mount Shasta, Mount Hood, and other peaks of the Cascades on a clear day. There is also, in addition to a hiking trail, accommodations for camping at several campgrounds situated in the area[4]. Due to the mountain's high elevation (producing a colder climate) and location in the Pacific Northwest, there are a multitude of flowers and plants in bloom during the summer, starting in late June and ending in the middle of August. This same blooming attracts many butterflies to the area during the summer months.

Ghost Town

Off of the trail head, there is a ghost town, where a few buildings and some mining equipment remain from the original settlement, which consisted of saloons, hotels, and some residences. The area surrounding the mountain was once known as the Bohemia Mining District, named after James "Bohemia" Johnson, who in 1863, discovered gold in the area. Bohemia City, the name of what is now the ghost town, was established along with the gold mine 3 years later, in 1866.

Climate

Mount Bohemia's climate is influenced by its location in the Pacific Northwest and the Cascade Range, as well as its elevation. The mountain features cool winter temperatures (above the −3 °C (27 °F) persistent snow line isotherm but still near freezing), and summers that feature warm afternoon highs but cool lows (near 40 °F (4 °C)). Because of these summer temperatures, as well as the lag in the ascension from the winter trough in temperature, spring, the season where the plants come out in bloom (which in this climate type is one and the same with summer) occurs as late as the latter part of June, and persists until late August, with temperatures warm enough for plant growth continuing into September, due to the seasonal lag typical of the Pacific Northwest coastal regions.

With its summers that feature daily average temperatures above 10 °C (50 °F) for only three months out of the year, its winters that are warmer than −3 °C (27 °F), and the pronounced summer dry season (well below the Köppen summer dry season threshold of 30 mm or less), Mount Bohemia's climate is the extremely rare dry summer version of the Maritime subarctic climate (Köppen Csc). Csc climates occur in only a few known locations in the world, with Schreiner Peak in Oregon being another example.
