Mortha is a village in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, India. The king Tarakasena ruled the area in ancient days. Currently Mortha is playing a key role in the political aspects of nidadavole constituency (formerly it is in Tanuku constituency) and Edupuganti Sesha Giri is the current sarpanch of the village. The village is on the banks of River Gosthani.

History

It is one of the ancient villages in India with more importance in the kingdom of Trakasura. The origin of the village name has a quite interesting facts in the history of India. In olden days there is a dog with huge structure which use to guard seven nearby villages. One day some thieves entered the village and served a poisonous food to the dog and made the dog into seven pieces which were thrown in seven different places. The "Mondem" of the dog remained in the village which has turned into rock in the same place, from which the village name "Mortha" origin. And the spot is now called as "Kukka Mondem" and is one of busiest center in the village. People of the village will worship this Devine rock (Mondem) for rains and proving the rock as a devine it rains heavily on the day.

Geography

Mortha is located at 16°80′N 81°70′E. It has an average elevation of 13 meters (42 feet). The historical River Gosthani flows along the Village and gives a nice visual impression for Mortha. It is said that the river has a spiritual power that any one who takes a dip will be washed off all sins, although this is often said about almost any body of water in India. The village is just 5 KM away from the great river Godavari.

Population

There are more than 5500 people living in Mortha with approximately 3000 voters. Most of the people were well educated and settled in various business and high position jobs. Mortha has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. People from this village travelled to abroad were the first in the district for jobs and business.

Education

Several good educational schools exist in Mortha, following the demand of current education standards. At present, there are three various government schools, and four private schools until tenth standard.People from neighboring villages comes to Mortha for education. for higher studies the people will choose the nearby town Tanuku (approx 7KM).

Economy

Mortha is essentially an agricultural village and is part of the Godavari River basin. The soil is very fertile. The entire region forms part of the rice bowl of India. Major crops grown are Rice, sugar cane, bananas, coconuts, various types of cerals and many different types of vegetables and flowers.

There are currently two medium and one large scale industries in Mortha. Apart from this there are several small scale industries in and surrounding the village. Mortha do have a good amount of poultry farms.

Transport

Mortha is situated at a distance of 7 km from Tanuku,40 km from Narsapur, 80 km from Eluru, and 40 km from Rajamundry. There is a regular APSRTC service buses from Tanuku to Rajamundary via this village. Private transport is available widely from Tanuku, Palakollu, Rajamundry and Eluru.

Railways

The nearest rail station is Tanuku which is 7KM and the nearest railway junction is Nidadavole which is 18 km away and is well connected to all places.

Air

The nearest airport is in Rajahmundry (30 Kilometers).

Sea

The nearest sea location is Narsapur which is 40 km from this place.

Health care

There is primary health care center available in the village supported by Byrraju Foundation. The health care center is open daily from morning to evening with health assistants. Physician visits the hospital daily in the afternoon. and there are few experienced private doctors always avilable in the village.

Water

This village has good water resources which you can directly drink from wells and hand pumps. There are two overhead tanks in the village managed by the panchayati, which provides the water on a timely manner and as required. Nowadays people started using purified mineral water supplied by Byrraju Foundation which is having a purification plant in the village. The river Gosthani is passing by the village and river Godavari is just 5 km away.

Other Organizations

There are various social organizations and Bajana samajams actively helping the village people in various aspects.

People Migration

People from this village have migrated to different parts of the world for education, business and employment purposes. Nowadays people are getting awareness about the importance of education and every one is trying to make their children well educated which will soon turns the village with 100% literates.
