Monica Penders (b. February 10, 1964 in Canberra, Australia) is an Australian film producer.
Life & Career
At the age of 13, Monica wanted to be involved in the movies. Seeing Star Wars 11 times at the cinema and secretly walking around with the ear muff hairstyle favored by Princess Leia, it is with some relief that Monica chose a career that would put her behind the camera and not in front.
It took a while for her to get there - for nearly 20 years she worked in the corporate arena in Australia and the US specializing in communications - media relations, organizational development, advertising and marketing. Her last corporate position was as Vice President - PR and Media Relations for Lend Lease Real Estate Investments US.
Other highlights of her career include marketing with The Walt Disney Company, her own public relations and communications business and a myriad of freelance jobs in the not for profit, corporate and entertainment word.
Since her transfer from Sydney to New York in 1998, Monica has been active on the independent film scene gaining experience through such films as I'll Take You There which was written and directed by the late Adrienne Shelly, as well as numerous student films via Columbia University where she also assisted in the University's film festivals over a number of years. Monica has also been involved in theatre projects such as The Indian Wants the Bronx and is currently directing public relations activities for an independent film company.
Monica returned to Australia in 2009 and is currently the Director of ScreenACT, the office of Film, TV and Digital Media in the Australian Capital Territory. She continues developing and producing her own projects under the Batavia Creative brand and was recently awarded grants from Screen Australia and artsACT for her feature project Eight Seasons.
A founding partner of Forgan-Smith Entertainment, the shingle under which she produced the US $27million film The Secret of Moonacre, Monica graduated from Griffith University, Australia with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in film and media studies and has undertaken film studies at New York University and the New School.
