Mominpura, Nagpur

Mominpura (urdu:مومنپور٥) (hindi:मोमिनपूरा) is a locality in city of Nagpur in Maharashtra, India. Mominpura popularly known as the Chandni Chowk of Nagpur. Small restaurants and hotels are open over night. Famous biryani delicacies can be enjoyed here. Jama Masjid is the biggest Mosque in Mominpura. There are many Mosques; namely, Gharib Nawaz Mosque, Masjid Ahl Al Hadith, Haidary Masjid, Masjid Aman ullah Seth, Choti Masjid, Masjid Qadar Sahab and many more. Mominpura is sarrounded by Ansar Nagar, Itwari, Bajeria, Hansapuri, Boriyapura and Timki. During the Month of Ramadan there held a big Market of Cloth, footwear, ornaments etc. People from all over Nagpur come here for shopping. The streets were full of crowds in Ramadan.

History

Three brothers Ghulam Ali (Kotwal), Mohammad Saaduddin (Subedar) and Mohammad Saladuddin (Minister and Kotwal) from Jhajjar are remembered as great scholars of Urdu and Persian during the reign of Maharaja Senasaheb Subha Chhatrapati Raghuji Bapusaheb Bhonsle III. They founded 'Jhajjar Bagh' at Hansapuri (Now Mominpura). In this location, they built their residence 'Aina-e Mahal', a well and a Masjid (now Masjid Ahle Hadith). 'Jhajjar Bagh' also known as 'Subedar ka Bada' was located where nowadays Mohammad Ali Road at Mominpura, Jama Masjid, Mohammad Ali Sarai and Furqania Madrasa are located.

Restaurants

There were many restaurants. Babbu Hotel, Bartania Hotel are known for 'Biryani'.Hotel Tanvir,Hotel Taj Al-kausar, Al- Yaseen, Haji Hotel, Rahman hotel, Gulgula hotel are also very popular. During Ramadan, these restaurants are open 24 hours.

Madrasas

Many scholars from the Middle East migrated to India with Islamic teaching. There are many Madrasas: Jamia Arabia, Darul Ulum, Khankahe Ashrafia and many more.

Conflicts

Hazrat Mustafa Baba, who stayed in front of a doctor's clinic in Mominpura, had followers from many nearby states. The mercurial Baba had become famous for miraculous spiritual powers. On the night of June 28, 2011, Baba passed away, after which his followers buried his body in the playground owned by Central Tanzim Committee, which is not a notified area for burial. Baba's funeral procession had headed to Mota Tajbagh in the late evening after daylong controversy.

In a dramatic turn, however, his followers brought the body back to Mominpura, as they did not agree to certain conditions put Tajbagh dargah committee for burial. They broke open the lock of the Mohammed Ali Serai's gate and apparently buried the Baba in front of the school inside the Serai at 5.30 am. The Serai management protested the act and also approached Tehsil police station. It filed a complaint of trespassing against the followers of Baba.A police said that the followers had assured they would take the body to Mominpura burial ground but later deviated from the plan. The followers broke the Serai's lock in presence of police and this triggered the Gherao at the CP office later in the day.One of the agitators told that it was not right to bury the Baba in the Serai that has the Jama Masjid close by.

"There are bound to be clashes and frequent skirmishes if the two venues are so closely located. During festivals, it can get difficult. Devotees of one venue may be inconvenienced by presence of another," he said.

This led to rioting between two groups, rioters burned the belongings of Baba.The rioters pelted stones, damaged properties and also attacked police personnel and vehicles. Around 20 vehicles, parked in the Sindhi Lane, were damaged. A few traffic policemen were attacked by the protestors near the Geetanjali Talkies. Some injured civilians and policemen were taken to the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital. A strong posse of riot police was deployed at the pickets in disturbed areas. A youth was critically injured in the riot.A section of the rioters ransacked the office of president of Mohammed Ali Serai and damaged its properties. Another group torched the belongings of Baba Mustafa. Police had to fire several tear gas shells and resort to lathicharge.
