Mitratech Holdings, Inc. provides software, and related services, that corporations and government agencies use to control the cost of, and to manage, legal operations (legal matter management) and governance, risk management, and compliance (GRC) processes as well as claims and case management. The company’s customers include Aon,[1] Cisco,[2] Express Scripts,[3] GMAC,[4] The Home Depot,[5] Pfizer,[6] and Toyota.[7] The adoption of Mitratech’s TeamConnect platform for matter management earned The Home Depot’s Libby Troughton, Legal IT Manager, top honors for Most Innovative Use of Technology by In-House Counsel in 2006 from American Lawyer Media’s Law Technology News, the leading legal technology publication. The same publication awarded Pfizer similar recognition for its implementation of TeamConnect.

The company was founded in 1987 by Dr. Ladan Behnia, a computer scientist who holds a Ph.D. in computer science and artificial intelligence from the University of Paris. The company’s first software product was designed to help law firms with legal matter management. In the early 1990s, however, Mitratech began instead to leverage its technology to build collaborative solutions in legal matter management for corporations and that is the company’s primary emphasis today.

Mitratech was named to the Inc. (magazine) 5000 list of fastest-growing U.S. companies in both 2010[8] and 2009.[9]

Products

Mitratech’s core product is TeamConnect and is available as an application suite or a development framework.

TeamConnect Legal is a suite of integrated applications built using web-based standards designed to engender Collaborative Accountability in the enterprise by providing greater transparency and traceability. The applications, each of which is available as a stand-alone, include:

  • Contract Management – Consolidates the organization’s portfolio of contracts and centralizes the creating, managing and leveraging of contracts. Legal teams are able to store and manage contracts electronically, tracking status, managing prevailing language and versions, tracking negotiations and amendments as well as upcoming renewals, expirations and other deadlines.
  • Early Case Assessment – Enables in-house counsel and outside law firms to gain a strategic view of the potential risks and costs associated with a matter and formulate a resolution scenario in the first 90 – 120 days. Tools enable counsel to identify key discovery issues, examine key facts, allegations and applicable laws and venues, analyze potential themes for both sides and assess strengths and risks and identify the best resolution path.
  • Entity Management – Centralizes documentation and filing requirements, enabling corporate secretaries and supporting counsel to comply with filing requirements across all jurisdictions and manage internal records and their distribution across the enterprise and to key outside stakeholders.
  • Executive Dashboard – Provides general counsel, the chief financial officer and other corporate executives a concise, interactive and real-time view of legal operations, including spend vs. budget, departmental performance trends and critical matters. Based on user-defined metrics, the dashboard provides an enterprise-wide view of vital compliance, legal, and business data in summary tables, dynamic graphs and metric monitors.
  • Legal hold – Consolidates and tracks the critical elements of creating, maintaining and enforcing legal holds in the kind of repeatable and defensible process that would withstand judicial scrutiny. Tools enable counsel to identify key documents and their location, notify custodians, generate uniform queries for custodial interviews and track the process and status throughout the life of the hold.
  • Matter Management – Provides in-house counsel with far-reaching and comprehensive controls for managing the overall legal process and spending while enabling secure collaboration with outside counsel. General counsel monitor legal matters and track activities, measure legal spending and assess budgetary and performance goals.
  • Service of Process (SOP) – Automates and manages the processing and routing of legal notices to reduce costs, improve accuracy and generate complete audit trails.
  • The e-billing application is available as the Collaborati Spend Management solution or as an on-demand service called TeamConnect Express. Mitratech’s e-billing solutions provide greater budget and spend controls and provide insight into outside counsel performance and value.

TeamConnect GRC provides both industry-specific governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) solutions as well as horizontal applications to manage FCPA compliance, anti-trust, ethics, policies & procedures, export controls, internal investigations, information security and privacy, data loss prevention (DLP), records retention, and HR-related issues. Functionality addresses the following four key areas:

  • Regulation – Enables legal teams to collaborate with regulators and key contributors, providing group workflow accountability while generating referenceable records of activities and outcomes.
  • Policies & Procedures – Links legal staff with compliance officers, regulatory managers and key line-of-business executives to ensure policies and procedures are catalogued, communicated and followed while tracking progress and activities.
  • Controls – Powers a collaborative environment for managing policies and auditing important practices, giving in-house lawyers a comprehensive view of organizational responsibilities and performance.
  • Remedial Action – Assists in-house counsel in identifying policy or procedural gaps and preparing action plans to address them.

TeamConnect Claims enables insurance providers to manage ongoing matters to quickly analyze losses, assess their value and move them to a prompt and fair resolution. TeamConnect Claims unites counsel, adjusters, experts, investigators and other claims partners, helping insurers reduce total loss costs and improve policyholder satisfaction.

TeamConnect Enterprise is an integrated platform development environment that utilizes a multi-tiered J2EE Web application architecture. The application tier runs in a standard Java application server. The scalable and extensible architecture provides a foundation for companies to design, build, deploy and maintain their own applications. Mitratech sponsors a program for the independent software vendor (ISVs) to assist them with APIs and other resources for building specialized applications for the TeamConnect platform and then offering them in the marketplace.

Licensing

Mitratech licenses TeamConnect as a perpetual on-premise with annual maintenance, a Software-as-a-Service, on-premise rental or via managed hosting.

Partners

Mitratech works with a number of consulting partners who assist the enterprise in developing and implementing TeamConnect. These include Acolyst,[10] CGS,[11] Duff & Phelps,[12] Dunn Solutions Group,[13] Huron Consulting Group,[14] June Consulting Group,[15] and Kiersted / Systems.[16]
