Background
McGary's father, Tim, coached him until 4th grade. Tim McGary had never played any organized sports. McGary played in YMCA and AAU basketball leagues as a youth.[3] McGary played on the 2007–08 Chesterton High School junior varsity team as a freshman, while Michigan recruit and future 2009–10, 2010–11 & 2011–12 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team captain, Zack Novak was a senior on the varsity team. He joined the varsity team the following season and played two years. McGary is afflicted with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. He eventually transferred from Chesterton, Indiana to the Brewster Academy, a prep school in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire to repeat his junior year.[2]
During the summer 2011 LeBron James Skills Academy, McGary stood out as the best player in attendance.[4] Later in the summer ESPN reported that McGary had narrowed his list of schools to six: University of Florida, University of Maryland, University of North Carolina, University of Michigan, Duke University and University of Kentucky.[5] On October 4, 2011, USA Today noted that McGary had completed his campus visits, which included only three campuses: University of Michigan, Duke University and University of North Carolina.[6] McGary is from Chesterton, which is the home of Novak.[6] His reported best friend,[7] Glenn Robinson III, son of Glenn Robinson, had commited to Michigan on September 14, 2010.[8] On November 3, 2011, McGary announced his verbal commitment to Michigan in a nationally broadcast press conference on ESPNU over his other two finalist Florida and Duke.[9][10][11] Within hours of the commitment, ESPN announced that Michigan ranked as the fifth best class in the nation.[12] He signed a National Letter of Intent with the team on November 9.[1] After several other schools announced their commitments, the signing of McGary moved Michigan from outside the top 25 at the end of October to the number 7 class in the nation, according to ESPN.[13][14]
