Overview
The company was founded by Michelle Romero and Annette Cavaness.[1] In 2004, Michelle Romero thought of an idea to change the outside of a handbag, without physically changing the bag itself. She created a prototype by taking apart her own bag that got spilled on, using super glue and scrap fabric. After creating the prototype, she went on to bring the Miche bag to life.[2]
Romero showed the prototype to her friend, Annette Cavaness, who loved the idea right away. She used her knowledge as an accessories buyer to work with Romero on developing a business plan. In 2005, they began Miche Bag, LLC and eventually received a patent for their product. Attempts at copying their patent has resulted in several lawsuits against other companies.[3]
The naming of the company comes from Michelle's nickname, Miche (pronounced MEE-chee), which her mother-in-law calls her.[4]
Styles and designs
There are different styles and colors of the Miche base bag, which are available in either black or brown for the small (classic) bag and black for the big bag and the mini. The shells (often spelled chelle like the end of 'Michelle') are purchased separately to the base bag, which attach to the bag using safe earth magnets. The small bags can be used as a clutch or shoulder bag, though the big bags are used more as a tote bag. Recently shells have been released for the big bag as a diaper bag that come with a matching changing pad. A hard clutch and soft wallet have also been released.
There are currently over 30 shell designs for the small bags and about 10 designs for the big bags. Both bag styles have different internal pockets layouts. Both types of bag have top zippers and removable handles, which are available in four sizes. The shorter traditional handles and longer handles for shoulder bags. The medium length handles use half traditional handle and half chain. An over body handle is used in conjunction with adaption rings.
The exterior of the small bag incorporates a silk and polyester blend in its hard sided construction, while the larger bag base is made of materials that have a softer ‘tote’ feel. The shell material varies depending on the style, such as faux leather, faux crocodile skin, faux cheetah fur, nylon, canvas or cotton. Some shells are only available through an in-home consultant.
The small bag size is 11.75 inches (0.298 m) (long) x 575 inches (14.6 m) (wide) x 6.5 inches (0.17 m). The larger bags are 15 inches (0.38 m) (long) x 5 inches (0.13 m) (wide) x 12 inches (0.30 m).
On January 8, 2010, Miche bag released a designer shell with proceeds going directly to the Huntsman Cancer Institute.[5][6]
