History

Caldwell Magnet School opened its doors to 450 students in August 1983. Within just three years, the magnet school program outgrew its Caldwell facility and moved, in August 1986, to the larger Meigs building at 713 Ramsey Street. At the end of the 2001 school year, the program was temporarily moved to an empty school building (the former Highland Heights Middle School) while a new facility was being rebuilt on the original Meigs Middle site. In August, 2004, the students returned to the newly built Meigs Middle Magnet School.

Curriculum offering

Meigs Magnet School is a school of choice, offering in-depth instruction for students who meet two sets of academic standards: grades received during the year prior to admittance (essentially a B+ average), and performance on standardized tests (about 30 percent of Davidson County students meet the standardized test criterion).[1]

Instruction begins each morning at 8:00 and concludes each afternoon at 3:00. In addition to traditional core studies, the curriculum is enhanced with courses in the arts and foreign language. Students have an opportunity to take art, computer, drama, and music each year they are enrolled at Meigs. Fifth, sixth and seventh graders rotate among these classes, along with physical education and foreign language each six weeks throughout the year. Weekly half-day "Encore" classes are offered to gifted students in grades five and six. Band, strings, and choir classes are available to students in grades five through eight.

For the students eighth grade year, students can audition for advanced classes in art, computer, multimedia design, drama and select choir. Advanced related arts students attend these classes all year. Students may also take level one French, Spanish or Latin to earn a foreign language high school credit. High school credits in physical science, Algebra I, and Geometry can also be earned.

Students who are eligible are offered automatic admission to Hume-Fogg Academic High School.

Student population data

Students entering Meigs must meet academic eligibility requirements. Their reading and math TCAP scores in third grade must both be advanced. In 2004-2005, 35.2 percent of Davidson County third graders were "advanced" in math,[2] and 35.8 percent were "advanced" in reading.[3] They also must have an 85% average or better for the last two grading periods of third grade and the first grading period of fourth grade.[4] A lottery is conducted to select among the qualifying students; about 30 percent of eligible students who apply are admitted. Using a lottery to select from a relatively large number of qualified students ensures that the student body is diverse. Meigs current enrollment is 665 students. This population is 47% male and 53% female. White students comprise 69%of the population, while 22% are African American, 6.8% are Asian, and 2.6% are Hispanic. The Free/Reduced Lunch Program includes 15.2% of the total population.[5] Meigs has no ELL students; .3% has been certified as eligible for special education services.

Extracurricular Activities

Athletics

Meigs has many athletic opportunities for its 7th and 8th grade students. Girls can play soccer, volleyball, basketball, track & field, and softball. Boys can play football, run cross country, and play basketball, track & field, soccer, wrestling, and croquet.

Meigs Magnet School also has many curriculum offerings, such as Student Council, Yearbook and Newspaper staff, Chess Club, 4-H, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), MPAC, Model UN, Certamen, Math team, Scrabble club, and Junior Classical League (JCL).
