Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols

Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols
Mathematical alphanumeric symbols redirects here. This article is about the Unicode block. For standard meanings of algebraic letters, see List of letters used in mathematics and science.

Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols is a Unicode block of Latin and Greek letters and decimal digits that enable mathematicians to denote different notions with different letter styles (one example is blackboard bold, called "double-struck" in Unicode terminology).

Unicode now includes many such symbols (in the range U+1D400 ... U+1D7FF).  The rationale behind this is that it enables design and usage of special mathematical characters (fonts) that include all necessary properties to differentiate from other alphanumerics, e.g. in mathematics an italic "A" can have a different meaning from a roman letter "A". These symbols are to be used only in mathematical formulas, not in general text.

All these letter shapes may be manipulated with MathML’s attribute mathvariant.

The letters in various fonts often have specific, fixed meanings in particular areas of mathematics. By providing uniformity over numerous mathematical articles and books, these conventions help to read mathematical formulae.

You will probably only see empty boxes or question marks in most cells of the following tables unless you have a suitable Unicode font (such as Code2001) and a browser (such as Mozilla Firefox) and operating system supporting Unicode characters outside the Basic Multilingual Plane.

Hexadecimal numbers are the code point of the character below them, other characters have a value one greater than the one above them. The characters with pink backgound are located in other Unicode blocks, such as Letterlike symbols. For example, ℛ (script capital r) is at U+211B. In the case of U+1D4C1
