The MGH Institute of Health Professions is a graduate university of health professions located at Massachusetts General Hospital. This hospital is the main teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School and also interacts with the Harvard School of Public Health.
The MGH Institute focuses on four main subject areas. These are Communications Sciences and Disorders, Medical Imaging, Nursing and Physical Therapy.
From 1873 until 1981 Massachusetts General Hospital operated the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing. This school granted diplomas in nursing. However with advances in medical technology and higher expectations of professionalship in throughout medical fields it was decided to shift to graduate level education.
In 1977 the state of Massachusetts authorized Massachusetts General Hospital to grant academic degrees. In that year the Massachusetts General Hospital Academic Division was launched. The program was renamed the MGH Institute of Health Professions is 1980 and admitted its first student. The first degrees granted were Master of Science in Physical Therapy and Master of Science in Nursing.
In 1985 MGH Institute was re-constituted as a separate corporation from Massachusetts General Hospital.
