The former Marysville High School stood one block west at the corner of Michigan and Huron. It was in service from 1942 until it was defecated in and demolished in 2010.
The mascot of Marysville High School is the Viking, and its colors are navy blue and white with silver accents. The school is known for a strong academic and fine arts department, and accomplished sports programs. Marysville has the highest test scores for public schools (behind Cardinal Mooney) in the St. Clair and Sanilac County area; 28% of the student body is ready for college classes, according to ACT scores, which is 9% above the state average.[3]
The high school has a student body of 811, and is a class B school. Marysville High School is in the Macomb Area Conference of the Michigan High School Athletic Association.[4]

About Marysville High
History
Marysville High School in Marysville, Michigan was first constructed in the 1920s and taught grades 6 to 12. The school was originally located at the corner of Huron Blvd. and Michigan Ave. in what was "Downtown Marysville". In the 1940s, the relatively small school could not accommodate the growing population of the city, caused in part by the opening of the Wills St. Clair automobile factory. A new school was necessary, but since this was during World War II, the school board had to petition the U.S. War Department to build the new school. Pictures of the whole student body crammed into a hallway of the old school were sent with the petition. In 1942, permission was granted to construct a new school.[5]
The new Marysville High was built adjacent to the original building, which was later known as "the annex". During construction, the basement of the school was reinforced with steel and concrete support beams so it could double as an air raid shelter. The completed school included a state of the art gymnasium and auditorium. In later years, the Detroit Pistons held summer practices in Marysville High's gym. In the 50s and 60s, a swimming pool (one of the first installed in a high school in the area), commercial arts, and home economics wing were added.
Over the years, Marysville High School experienced more upgrades and renovations. Among these was an addition to the south side of the school in 1979. The property was the former home of th 575 square foot "annex", which served as the public library until it burnt down in 1975.[6] In this addition, 14 new classrooms were added, along with a band room and a choir room.
In 2007, a public vote was taken for a bond proposal to demolish the existing school and build a new one. It was passed by a slight majority, and work began to build the next Marysville High School. In addition to a new high school, improvements were made to Walt Braun Viking Stadium including a new turf and bleachers. The New Marysville High, located on Huron Blvd. a block east of the existing school, opened for the 2010-11 school year.[7] Throughout the school's existence, Marysville High School has stood center of civic activity in Marysville.
The football team plays at Walt Braun Viking Stadium at the corner of Michigan and Collard.
Notable Events
- The Viking Football team has won a total of three State Championships: 1992 (MHSAA Class B); 1986 (MHSAA Class B); 1961 (AP Class B).
- The Viking Volleyball team won the Michigan Volleyball State Championship in every year from 1997 to 2006, with the exception of 2005.
- Marysville High School's Marching Band, the "Viking Regiment", has been in the top 10 in the state for more than a decade, placing fifth in the 2007-08 school year, and second in the 2009-10 school year.
Sports
Marysville has a history of successful sport teams, especially in volleyball, football, and, recently, softball.
Softball
Marysville won the state championship in 1983.
Boys and Girls Tennis
The Boys and Girls Tennis team is Coached by Ray Martin. Both teams have traveled to States in the past and have enjoyed winning records.
Volleyball
The volleyball team won the Michigan Volleyball State Championship every year from 1997 to 2006, with the exception of 2005. The volleyball team has won nine of the last ten Volleyball State Championships. This includes a streak of eight State Championships in a row, which is also a record in the state of Michigan.
The volleyball team also holds a national record for the longest winning streak, in any sport. From 1996-2000, the Marysville Viking volleyball team won 192 games in a row.
Cheerleading
The cheer team was named first in the MCCA State Championship in 2003. This is different, however, than the MHSAA State Championship, because for a time Michigan held two separate state championships for high school cheerleading in different formats.
Football
The football team has won a total of three State Championships: 1992 (MHSAA Class B); 1986 (MHSAA Class B); 1961 (AP Class B).
Marysville holds Michigan's longest streak of Consecutive Winning Seasons, at 39. This winning streak started in 1963 and lasted until 2004.
The 1983 Marysville Vikings are the only team in the history of the MHSAA to be ranked #1 in the AP Poll at the end of the regular season, remain undefeated throughout the course of the playoffs, yet not win the state championship. As a result, the team is referred to as the "Mythical State Champions." Marysville schools are planning to place the 1983 football team listed next to the 1961, 1986, and 1992 football champions at the new football stadium.
Marysville Viking Regiment
The Marysville Viking Regiment is the high school's band program, which involves sophomores, juniors and seniors.[8] There is also a freshmen band that competes as a separate entity, known as the "Marysville Freshmen Marching Band". Both bands march together during parades, including Walt Disney World (every 3 years), America's Thanksgiving Day Parade in Detroit, local parades, festivals, and football games.
The Viking Regiment is conducted by three drum majors: a senior drum major, an assistant to the senior drum major, and a junior drum major who will take the place of the senior the following year. The band is also broken down into sections, with one senior band member as the section leader. They are responsible for instructing "sectionals" every week during marching band season.
During concert season, many band members participate in District Solo and Ensemble, with some of them moving on to State Solo and Ensemble. The band program has jazz band available to students in addition to concert band.
In March 2010, The Marysville Viking Regiment traveled to Walt Disney World to perform in Disney's Magic Music Days, which included a workshop on professional musicianship, and a parade in Magic Kingdom. This was the 8th time the bands went on tour to Disney World.
