Amateur career

Scheifele played major junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League with the Barrie Colts. TSN mid-season ranking published in January 2011 projected Scheifele to go 21st overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft[1], but in the June draft he was selected seventh overall by the Winnipeg Jets.[2][3].

Professional career

In 2011–12 NHL pre-season, in his first exhibition game, he scored two goals and two assists against the Columbus Blue Jackets, garnering the first star.[4] On October 3, 2011, the Winnipeg Jets announced that they had signed Scheifele to an entry-level contract,[5] and he started the 2011–12 NHL season in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets. Scheifele scored his first NHL goal on October 19, 2011 against James Reimer of the Toronto Maple Leafs. On October 23, Scheifele was sent back to the OHL and rejoined the Barrie Colts.[6]

Trivia

  • In addition to being the first player drafted by the new Winnipeg Jets, Mark is coached in Barrie by Dale Hawerchuk, who in turn was drafted by the original Winnipeg Jets NHL team.[7]
  • Mark is the third Colts player to be drafted in the first round by the franchise, as Aleksandr Burmistrov and Bryan Little were drafted eighth and twelfth, respectively, when the franchise played as the Atlanta Thrashers.
