Professor Mark David Bailey (born Castleford, Yorkshire, 21 November 1960[1]) is the current professor of Later Medieval History at the University of East Anglia. He is a former England rugby player. In January 2011, he became the High Master of St. Paul's School.
Rugby career
Bailey was educated at Ipswich School and began playing rugby at the College of St Hild and St Bede, University of Durham where he received a First-Class degree in Economic History.[2] He went on to play seven times for England as a winger. On 16 June 2003, Bailey was honoured with the Palatinate Award for Sport. He also played Minor Counties cricket for Suffolk for several seasons.
Academic career
Bailey was appointed Head of Leeds Grammar School in 1999 amid some opposition from the local teachers’ union.[3] He led the merger of Leeds Grammar School and Leeds Girls' High School following his appointment as both Headmaster and Chief Executive of the Grammar School at Leeds.[4][5]
On the 27th April 2009 it was announced that Dr Mark Bailey would leave the Grammar School at Leeds in April 2010 after being appointed a professor of Later Medieval History at the University of East Anglia and a visiting fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. He has recently been announced as successor to George Martin Stephen as High Master of St Paul's School, in London.[2]
