From university, Stephen moved into teaching, becoming headmaster of
The Perse School , Cambridge, then High Master ofManchester Grammar School , where he focused on widening access to the school by increasing the availability ofbursaries for the children of less wealthy families. In2004 he moved from Manchester to St Paul's, where he is currently High Master. In the past he has served aschairman of theHeadmasters' Conference , and in this role has represented the interests of public schools in the British media.Publications
