George Martin Stephen, PhD (born 1949) is the current High Master (headmaster) of St Paul's School, located in west London, and is also an author. His wife, Jenny Stephen, is the headmistress of South Hampstead High School in north-west London.

Education and training

He was educated at Uppingham School in Rutland, England, and at the University of Leeds, where he obtained his BA degree in English and History, followed by a PhD from the University of Sheffield. Fact|date=April 2008

Career

From university, Stephen moved into teaching, becoming headmaster of The Perse School, Cambridge, then High Master of Manchester Grammar School, where he focused on widening access to the school by increasing the availability of bursaries for the children of less wealthy families. In 2004 he moved from Manchester to St Paul's, where he is currently High Master. In the past he has served as chairman of the Headmasters' Conference, and in this role has represented the interests of public schools in the British media.

Publications

Stephen has published 15 books on English literature and naval history, as well as three historical crime thrillers.
