Biography
Márcio-André de Sousa (sometimes called M-A) is graduated in Literature and has a master's degree in Poetics by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.[1] In 2008, he received a scholarship-prize by the Brazilian National Library Foundation[2] and, in 2009, was poet-in-residence in Monsanto, Portugal.[3] He taught an advanced training course in creative writing and sound poetry at University of Coimbra and literary theory at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and several workshops sound poetry in secondary schools in Portugal.
In 2007, he won the pages of newspapers by his suicide performance in the ghost town of Chernobyl.[4] In his lecture-of-one-man (that he called "Conference Poetic-Radioactive of Pripyat"), Marcio-Andre remained six hours reading his poems between the ruins of the ghost-town Pripyat (Chernobyl), at so-called Zone of Exclusion, under the deliberate risk of contamination by cesium 137 and strontium 90. After the event, he received the nickname "poeta radioativo" (radioactive poet). This performance resulted in the book Ensaios Radioativos, where he describes the experience of contamination.[5]
His radical and contemporary literary work has inspired a wide variety of academic studies, among them, a work by Ronaldo Ferrito, in UFRJ,[6] and the project Polis Minima,[7] by Laurie Christine Tavares. His poem "O objeto" has resulted in a choral piece by the French composer Jean-Pierre Caron and his book Intradoxos is being adapted into a movie by Filmmaker Paula Gaitan.[8]
Literature
Belonging to the so-called "Generation 00" of literature in Brazil,[9] Marcio-Andre is one of the most influential[10] and relevant[11] poets of the younger generations in Brazil and one of the most controversial essayists today.[12] With three published books, was chief-editor of the bi-national (Brazil / Portugal) Confraria Magazine (ISSN 1808-6276)[13] and founder of Confraria do Vento.[14] Eventually he write to Brazilians newspapers, like O Globo,[15] Jornal do Brasil [16] and Estado de Minas.[17] As a translator, he published texts of Gilles Yvain, Serge Pey, Gherasim Luca, Mathieu Benezet, Paul Valery and Hagiwara Sakutaro.[18]
About his literary work, the award-winning filmmaker Walter Salles said: Marcio-Andre is one of the brightest voices of a younger generation of Brazilian artists.[19] The renowned Portuguese sociologist Boaventura de Sousa Santos came to declare that the poetry of Marcio-Andre is one of the most notable of his generation.[20] The American poet Stephen Rodefer wrote the following statement about him: From Paris, via New York, it appears that M-A is the one to watch in the break-away pack of the new Brazilian poets. Both the man, 'wrenched from the husk of night' with a violin in his hip pocket, and the remarkable body of work for one so young, in which we are so marvellously 'granted teeth and eyes and woven into daylight and made to hear.[21]
Performance and sound poetry
Multimedia artist, Marcio-Andre has stood out with his research in the area of sound poetry.[22] He held solo performances in several cities in the world, including Paris, London, Buenos Aires, Lisbon and São Paulo, and made experimental pieces for theater and short movies.[23] Between 2004 and 2007, led the group Arranjos para assobio (Arrangements for whistle) of poetic textures and experimental realities, linked with a sound research project at UFRJ, under academic advising by the philosopher Manuel Antonio de Castro. In 2009, he presented a performance with the American poet Bruce Andrews, founder of L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E Magazine.[24] In 2009, he has toured to Europe with his work Indivisible: polyphonic-poem for voices, violin, electronic processing, bells and whistles[25]
In his performances, Marcio-Andre uses the computer to processing, live, harmonics sounds and percussive sounds taken from the violin and voice. From this processing, from the creation of electronic textures and from loop recordings, it overlaps sound layers and folds to create a uniform mass of texts and sounds. In his plays are noted influences from noisy music, minimalist music and Eastern music, especially by the use of Tibetan chants and modes of Noh theater. He uses, yet, abstract projections, videodances and video loops projected onto the stage and incorporates various other props in presentations.
After visiting Brazil, the Scottish poet Richard Price wrote: M-A’s presentation of four short films with accompanying music and voice had the flavour of a Kraftwerk journeying (but trains not autobahns) and the minimalist dance-duet which he appropriated and scored was one of my enduring memories of this remarkable country;[26] and the American poet Forrest Gander, after see his performance in Portugal, said: His performance is wonderful and the violin work really well with the delivery of your poem.[27]
