History
Marc Rémillard began work as a musician in Quebec City in 2007. He began his career under the nickname Traumasick, which he chose to abandon early on to adopt his real name.
The first original track he officially released was 'A Little Less Glitches', which came out on the multi-artist EP 'Get Glitched', released in 2008 by Gato Negro Music. The record also featured original tracks by Ahllex and Mankeletor.[1]
His second EP 'Feeling Fresh' came out on So French Records in May 2009. It notably features a remix by Xinobi, which contributed to increase considerably his visibility on the electronic music scene. The original track of the same name has been remixed by a sizable number of artists, including Ahllex, Freshlovers, Awkoder 89 and Kid Machine.[2]
Rémillard successively formed the duos Doremi and Doitathome with fellow electro artist Ahllex and released tracks under this name for a short period, including 'Chivers' (2008), which received positive comments by French artist Mr Oizo.[3] He then became an in-demand remixer, contributing remixes for SUPER PIXEL!, Dee and Louis La Roche, among others. In 2009, he collaborated with Montreal DJ Fanthom for various projects and concerts, and formed another duo, named 'The Atlantique' with Kid Machine.
In 2010, Rémillard signed the track 'Disco Raptor' and its EP with Royal Fetish Recordings. The original mix features Montreal singer Dee. The record also releases four remixes of 'Disco Raptor' and two original tracks, Rémillard's 'I Love Dinosaurs' and Ahllex's 'T-Rex'.[4]
Marc Rémillard also recently collaborated with Quebec-based film director Rocky Hamilton (Rotoscope Films) on the production of a music video for his hit Disco Raptor, in which Dee figures prominently. The launching concert for the video took place in January 2010, where Marc Rémillard shared the stage with Softswap and Ahllex.[5] On various occasions in 2010, he also appeared on stage with Dee, Softswap, Gör FLsh, Systembanger, Kay Rozen, The Ultra, Mashup Potatos, NROTB (Nu Ravers On The Block) and M.I.M.[6] He is managed by Music & Friends as of summer 2010.[7]
In 2008, he was awarded first prize for the international remix contest 'Looking 4 the KLF', presented by POP Incorporated.[8] He also won a Canadian remix contest - presented by Radio-Canada's 'Bande à Part' radio channel - in October 2009 by public acclamation with his remix of the song 'Vague' by We Are Wolves.[9]
Some of his original songs have been aired frequently on Canadian radio stations, including NRJ, CKRL and CHYZ, and his music video has played on music TV channel MusiquePlus.
Recently in 2010, Marc Rémillard started managing the North-American sub-label for two European electronic record labels : Royal Fetish Recordings & Digithype Records. Remillard says he is going to work as a promoter as well as an artist manager. His studio is located in Montreal.
Style and Influences
Marc Rémillard is most notorious for his skills in composition of fully original material. He works with the music composition software Renoise, which is peculiar in its use of the old Tracker interface. The software is largely unheard of, in part because of its user-unfriendliness, since it uses a numeric interface and requires to some degree a basic understanding of hexadecimal codes. However, it allows for an absolute and detailed control of all sounds, instead of using the more usual sequencing technique.[10]
His style has been described by critics as 'deeply inspired by the French touch tradition, but Montrealized, i.e. trashier than the original Parisian version.' [11] Rémillard claims to have been largely influenced by French electro artists such as Daft Punk, Justice, SebastiAn, Para One, Mr. Oizo and members of the Kitsuné label, as well as Portuguese artist Xinobi, New York's Drop The Lime and lots of artists doing heavy bass music.[12]
