Early and Personal Life
Marc "Sakuragi" Pingris was born on October 16, 1981 to Jean Marc Pingris, Sr., and Erlinda Prado. During his collegiate years, he would go to play for the varsity basketball team of the Philippine School of Business Administration. He started his career at the Far Eastern University, Manila where he was discovered.[citation needed]
He also played for the Cebu Gems in Metropolitan Basketball Association.
In 2007, he is married by young actress Danica Sotto, daughter of actor Vic Sotto and Dina Bonnevie.
Air21
Pingris was selected by the Air21 Express as the 3rd overall pick in the 2004 PBA Draft. The draft also include James Yap, who will soon be his teammate at Purefoods. He played a few games prior to the trade that sent him to the Purefoods TJ Hotdogs.
Purefoods
He was traded to Purefoods after having played a few games with the Express. He was traded along with Egay Billones. In the 2005-06 PBA season, he was awarded with the Finals MVP in the 2006 PBA Philippine Cup as Purefoods defeated Red Bull, 4-2. In Game 2 of the Finals of the 2006 season, he scored 21 points to lead Purefoods to a 93-82 win. In the 2007-08 PBA Philippine Cup Finals, he grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds, leading to his new nickname, Rebounding Demon. Purefoods, need a pure center in the absence of Rommel Adducul due to nasopharynx cancer, shipped him to the Magnolia Beverage Masters in exchange for Enrico Villanueva.
Magnolia/San Miguel
He was traded at the start of the 2008 PBA Fiesta Conference to the Magnolia Beverage Masters in exchange for Enrico Villanueva. He started his first game for Magnolia against his former team, Purefoods, coming as a starter.
Pingris-Santos trade
The long rumored trade of Burger King marquee player Arwind Santos to San Miguel has now been finalized.
According to reports, Santos goes to San Miguel in exchange for two players, 6-foot-4 power forward Marc Pingris and 6-foot-6 sophomore Ken Bono, and San Miguel's 2010 first round pick.
“The reason lang na-tagalan itong negotiation is we want a draft pick, not a player sa package because we already have 17 players including the three picks we’ll have in this Sunday’s Draft,” Alvarez told the Bulletin. Santos was the first round pick of the Bert Lina-owned franchise (second overall) in the 2006 Draft.
Pingris was also an original member of the team being the third overall pick in the Draft four seasons back. He played for one season for the team before being shipped to Purefoods. He was then traded to San Miguel last year.[2]
Pingris back to Purefoods
Pingris was released to the Giants after the Burger King Whopper agreed in principle to get Purefoods' first and second round picks for 2010.
Pingris' return to the Giants fold was confirmed by Rene Pardo in an interview with GMANews.TV. "We have agreed to trade our first and second round picks next year to Burger King for Pingris."
Pingris is the first player to be unloaded since the Arwind Santos trade. The Whopper are expected to unload four more players, including two to the Barako Bull Energy Boosters.
The Whopper acquired the services of Larry Rodriguez via a trade although the Energy Boosters have yet to determine the players they will get in return.
Burger King board representative and incoming PBA chairman Lito Alvarez said he feels Purefoods needs Pingris more as the Whopper would most likely maximize its new recruits.
Purefoods and Burger King are not the only team busy transacting one deal after another as Rain or Shine and Barako Bull also went into the trading table.[3]
