Marathea is in the municipal unit of Sellana. Marathea had a 2001 population of 709 for the village and 967 for the municipal district. The village is situated in the Thessalian Plain.
Its residents are based in agriculture and other businesses. Its main production are cotton. In the older times, the village was known as Vanari (Βάναρη) and was renamed to Marathea in the late-20th century.
