Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai

Manonmaniyam P. Sundaram Pillai (April 4, 1855 - April 26, 1897) is writer of the famous Tamil drama Manonmaniyam .

History

Born in Alapuzha in Kerala state of Indiato Perumal Pillai and Madathi Ammal, Pillai studied religious literature such as Devaram thiruvasagam during his childhood. Nagapatinam Narayana Samy Pillai was the Tamil Teacher to him. He has completed his B.AIn the year 1876 and Married Sivagami Ammal in the following year.

His career as an educator began in 1877. He worked as principal at Thirunelveli, a bilingual English-Tamil school and later played a key role in the school's development. Pillai later joined as aPhilosophy teacher at Thiruvananthapuram H.H. The Maharaja’s College and completed his M.A. in 1880. During that period he became acquainted with Professor Robert Harvey.

Religious work

He started the Saivapraka sabai in Thiruvanathapuram.

Literature work

His famous Drama Manonmaniam was published in 1891. பேராசிரியர் சுந்தரம் பிள்ளை படைத்தளித்த தமிழ்த் தாய் வாழ்த்து :

The song Niraarum Kadal Udutha in the Tamil drama Manaonmaniyam accepted as official Tamil Anthem in June 1970.

Transliteration

Nīrānum kaṭal uṭutta nila maṭantaik kelilolakum Cīrānum vatanamenat tikalparatak kaṇṭamitil Tekkaṇamum atirciranta tirāviṭa nil tinunāṭum Takkacira pirainutalum tarittanarum tilakamumē! Attilaka vācanaipōl anaittulakum inpamura, Etticaiyum pukalmaṇakka inunta penum tamiṇaṅkē! Tamiṇaṅkē! Nin ciriḷamait tiramviyuntu! Ceyal marantu vāltutumē! Vāltutumē! Vāltutumē!

:English Translation

The Authentic English translation of the above song is as follows: "Bharat is like the face beauteous of Earth clad in wavy seas; Deccan is her brow crescent-like on which the fragrant 'Tilak' is the blessed Dravidian land. Like the fragrance of that 'Tilak' plunging the world in joy supreme reigns Goddess Tamil with renown spread far and wide. Praise unto You, Goddess Tamil, whose majestic youthfulness, inspires awe and ecstasy."

Last Days

Professor Sundaram Pillai respected his Teacher Prof. Rober Harvey. Professor Sundaram Pillai dedicated his Drama Manonmaniyam to Prof. Rober Harvey also named his farm house his professors name. Professor Sundaram Pillai died at age of 42 1897 26 April.
