Manuel Ayala (born November 6, 1984(1984-11-06) in Artesia, California) is a professional baseball pitcher who used to be in the Philadelphia Phillies organization, and now plays for Calgary Vipers, in the North American League. He attended East Los Angeles Community College.

Professional career

Mesa Miners

Ayala was drafted by the Mesa Miners of the Independent Golden Baseball League after tryouts in Fullerton, California in 2004.[1] He played the entire 2005 season with Mesa. He went 12-4 with a 3.05 ERA, one shutout, three complete games, one save and 82 strikeouts in 22 games, 14 starts. He was named the "Rookie Pitcher of the Year" in the Golden Baseball League at seasons end.[1][2][3]

San Diego Padres

On September 19, 2005 the San Diego Padres acquired Ayala from the Mesa Miners.[1][4] He was the 12th player acquired by a Major League Baseball team from the Golden Baseball League and the first acquisition by the Padres form the GBL.[1] In his first season, 2006, Ayala played for the Class-A Fort Wayne Wizards, the Class-A Advanced Lake Elsinore Storm and the Triple-A Portland Beavers. On April 25, Ayala was promoted to the Fort Wayne Wizards form the Padres extended spring training.[5] He then went a combined 5-4 with a 4.26 ERA and 81 saves in 27 games, 13 starts in '06.

In his second season in the Padres organization, 2007, Ayala played with both the Class-A Advanced Lake Elsinore Storm and the Double-A San Antonio Missions. On June 18, Ayala was the first player in the Minor Leagues to 10 wins.[6] Ayala was both a "Mid-Season All-Star" and a "Post-Season All-Star" in the California League.[7][8] Between the two clubs, Ayala went 12-6 with a 2.90 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 22 games, all starts. His 2.22 ERA while he was with the Storm was the lowest in the California League.[8]

Ayala split the 2008 season between the Double-A San Antonio Missions and the Triple-A Portland Beavers. He started the season on the disabled list with an elbow strain and began the season in extended spring training.[9][10] When he was activated from the DL, Ayala went a combined 7-4 with a 4.96 ERA, one shutout and 68 strikeouts in 21 games, 17 starts. In his second career appearance at the Triple-A level and first in 2008 Ayala pitched a shutout against the Fresno Grizzlies at PGE Park on August 13.[11]

Philadelphia Phillies

On April 1, 2009 Ayala was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies.[12][13] In 2009 Ayala played for the Class-A Advanced Clearwater Threshers of the Florida State League. He was involved in no decisions with a 3.72 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 10 games, all in relief. After the season he played for the Tigres de Aragua of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.
