Route description
Route 118 begins at an intersection with State Route 35 north of Waterford, near its intersection with State Route 5. Route 118 departs to the east, passing through East Waterford, meeting the northern end of State Route 37 before entering the town of Norway. Route 118 continues east into town, passing south of Lake Penneseewassee (Norway Lake), before meeting State Route 117, which approaches from the south. Route 117 North turns to join Route 118 East, and the two routes continue into downtown Norway, serving as Main Street. Upon reaching the end of Main Street, the two routes intersect with State Route 26. Route 118 ends at this intersection, with Route 117 joining Route 26 northbound into South Paris.
History
Route 118, when it was first commissioned in 1925, extended northward along modern Routes 35 and 5 into the town of Bethel, meeting Route 26 in town. When Route 35 was commissioned shortly thereafter, Route 118 was co-signed with it and a portion of Route 5 into Bethel. Route 118 was truncated in 1938 to its current terminus in Waterford at Route 35. At this time, Route 118 ended in Norway at the intersection with Route 117. Sometime in the 1980s, Route 118 was co-signed along Route 117 to its current terminus at Route 26, extending the highway two miles.[2]
