Dussehara is a ten day festival celebrated in September or October by the northern states of India to mark the victory of Lord Ram over the evil demon-king Ravana. Ramlila, which is the re-enactment of the Ramayana, is staged in various cities, towns and villages. On the tenth day of the festival, the effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakaran and son Meghnath are burned to portray the triumph of good over evil.
The celebrations take different forms. For example:
- the residents of Mysore worship the goddess Sarswati for the first six days.and then the goddesses Durga and Lakshmi for the next four days. On the tenth day .a procession of elephants, horses. folk dancers, nobles, and visitors leaves the Mysore palace.[citation needed]
- in West Bengal the worship is entirely of Durga and this is the biggest[vague][citation needed] festival of the region. The people wear new clothes and greet each other in community pandals where the idols of Durga and her family are set up. Family and friends get together to feast.[citation needed]
- in Nepal they worship Durga for ten days of the Dashain Festival
- for the Maharashtrians, Dussehara is a festival of wealth and the shami tree is worshipped as it is believed[vague] to destroy the worshipper's sins.[citation needed]
