Dungar College is a Government college in the Bikaner city of Indian state of Rajasthan. Courses are offeered in Science, Commerce and Arts.

History

Govt. Dungar College, Bikaner in its nascent state was called The Darbar School, started in 1837 by the then ruler of Bikaner State, Sh. Dungar Singhji. He was the 20th ruler of the erstwhile state of Bikaner. Coronated in 1872, he worked for the development of the state in the fields of education, judiciary, rail, roads, canals and general administration.

After his demise, his brother Ganga Singhji elevated the Darbar School to Dungar Memorial College on 25 September, 1912. College level teaching started in 1928. In the year 1937 degree classes started in the college and in the same year the school was separated from the college with the name of Sardul School. In July 1940, intermediate Science Faculty started with Physics and Chemistry subjects. In 1942, Degree level Science, law classes and post- graduate Departments of Hindi, Sanskrit, English, History and Economics were opened.

In the year 1951, there were only five post-graduate colleges in Rajasthan. Dungar College was one of them.

In 1962, the college shifted from Sardul school premises to its present-building. Postgraduate teaching in physics and Chemistry started in the same year. In 1970 M.Sc classes in Zoology, Botany and LLM classes in law faculty were started. The college enjoyed the privilege of being the only college of Rajasthan, where postgraduate studies in law being pursued. The college extended its academic growth with the postgraduate teaching in Geography, Sociology, Economics, Geology and Urdu departments. From 1988-1995 the college was given the status of an autonomous college. In the session 1996-97, the commerce faculty was started in the college.

Today this college is one of the premier institutions of Rajasthan, where 22 subjects are being taught at Degree level, 17 at post graduate level, and 10 at M.Phil level. Research work is also being carried out for Ph.D Degrees in all the P.G. Departments. This is the privilege of the college that 85 faculty members are registered and recognized for research work with Maharaja Ganga Singh University, Bikaner.

Dungar College was recognized by the UGC u/s 2f and 12B in the year 1972.

The Monogram of the college depicts a flying swan across the vast ocean of knowledge symbolizing that the field of knowledge is as vast and extensive as in an ocean and the logo has been quoted from Upanishad

1951 Reformation and unification of the states. The college was one amongst the five prominent post-graduate colleges of the Rajasthan State.
1962 College Shifted to the present building at the Jaipur Road.
1967 M.Sc. classes started in Physics and Chemistry.
1970 Post-graduate classes of Zoology, Botany started. LLM course also started. Teaching of Drawing & Painting and Rajasthani started.
1987 Affiliated to the University of Ajmer
1988-1995 Enjoyed the Govt. Autonomous College Status. M.Phil. courses in Botany, Zoology, Chemistry
1996-97 Commerce Faculty Started
2003-04 Affiliation to the Bikaner University
Sept. 06, 2006 NAAC evaluation of University Grants Commission
2007 Enjoyed College of Excellence status. Self-finance courses in Zoology, Geography, Sanskrit
2008-09 At present Under-graduate studies (21 subjects); Post-graduate (17 subjects), M.Phil (10 subjects)
