Doug Yates has been around the sound of revving engines for as long as he can remember. As the son of engine builder and team owner Robert Yates, Doug possesses a passion for stock car racing that is unmatched by others. Carrying on racing’s deeply rooted father-and-son heritage, Doug Yates has built a solid reputation in motorsports by winning on and off the track.
Doug Yates was born and raised in the heart of Charlotte, NC. He attended North Carolina State University and received a degree in mechanical engineering in 1990. Doug worked for his dad during his summers out of school and after graduation returned home to help run Robert Yates Racing. With his education and fascination in engines, Doug immediately became head engine builder at Robert Yates Racing.
While working at his dad’s team, Doug’s knowledge and responsibility in engine building began to grow. In 1999 he worked as the head engine builder for Winston Cup Champion Dale Jarrett. This crowning achievement in Doug’s life left him motivated to go even faster.
In 2004, legendary engine builders Jack Roush and Robert Yates were the only teams running Ford engines in NASCAR’s premiere series. In an effort to combine knowledge and technology, the men formed what is now Roush Yates Engines. Doug took on a new role with this alliance and was named CEO and President of Roush Yates Racing Engines.
In 2007, Robert Yates retired as owner of Robert Yates Racing. Doug took over his father’s team, a powerhouse that had won a remarkable 57 races and 1 Winston Cup Championship. The team’s name became Yates Racing in 2008 and Doug officially had his own two car team. With Ford power provided by Roush Yates Engines, Yates Racing quickly became a notable contender in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series.
In an effort to grow Roush Yates Engines, Doug Yates started Roush Yates Performance Parts in late 2008. The idea for Roush Yates Performance Parts came from seeing all the used parts from his engine building business and Yates Racing go to waste. Now new and used engine and chassis parts can be purchased by the public at Roush Yates Performance Parts and online at www.roushyatesparts.com.
In 2009 Doug Yates purchased his father’s half of Roush Yates Engines to become a co-owner in the company. As CEO, Doug leads a staff of 170 employees located in four state-of-the-art facilities. Doug has grown Roush Yates Engines from a NASCAR Sprint Cup engine shop to a world-class engine building company that builds powerful engines for multiple racing series including:
Nationwide Camping World Truck ARCA Cammer Sprint car Dirt Late Model NHRA Marine Off-Road trucks
In January 2010 Doug Yates formed a partnership with Front Row Motorsports and Richard Petty Motorsports to field more Fords in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series. Thirteen Sprint Cup teams run engines built by Roush Yates, including Roush Fenway Racing, Richard Petty Motorsports, Woods Brothers Racing, and Front Row Motorsports.
Doug’s continuous commitment to Ford and their racing program differentiates him as a race team owner. His favorite part of the motorsports industry has always been the engines, and Ford has always been his manufacturer of choice. Doug is especially proud to be part of a team that developed the first purpose built race engine designed by Ford, the FR9.
May 2010 will mark twenty years that Doug Yates has worked in the motorsports industry and his third season as a NASCAR team owner. Whether he is running a race team or building champion caliber engines, Doug Yates continues to exemplify tradition and success that will follow him well into the future. Doug Yates Awards:
