The Double Yellow is an award-winning alternative rock band formed in Nashua, New Hampshire in 2006 and now based out of Greater Boston, Massachusetts. The band's debut album, Everything & Nothing, was released on December 20, 2008. The group rose to prominence in the New England area after competing in and winning an unprecedented number of performance competitions at the local, state, and region-wide level, being named the “Best Band in Nashua”, “Best Band in New Hampshire”, and eventually “Best Band in New England” in a span between late 2006 and 2007.[1] The band lists their influences as spanning from Maroon 5 and Matchbox 20 to Barenaked Ladies and The Calling.[2]

History

The beginnings

In late 2005, while still students at Nashua High School South, Andrew Cote and Jeff Moore created a group known as Boone County, which had a constantly rotating lineup of personnel, until finally settling on a lineup involving the pair, future Double Yellow front man and solo comedic musician Ryan Quintal, and guitarist Evan Hedrich.[3] As luck would have it, weeks before the breakup of the group, Boone County took part in a New Hampshire Band Competition, where they met eventual Double Yellow guitarist and former Stubblefield ripper Kevin Thibault.[4] With the addition of local bassist Peter Balogh, the line up was complete. However, creative differences resulted in his early departure. Upon settling for guitarist Evan Hedrich’s brother Will Hedrich on bass guitar, the lineup was finalized.

Metronome Sessions

In January 2007 The Double Yellow headed into Studio Metronome in Brookline, New Hampshire, with noted producer Pete Peloquin (Dave Matthews Band, Oasis, Good Charlotte, The Hives, Gnarls Barkley, Alice in Chains, Dropkick Murphys) to record their first studio effort, the Metronome Sessions demo.[5] Released on January 14, 2007, it included three songs, including their lead off single “The One”, which won them an internet award for “Single of the Week”.[6] These are the only recordings that feature bassist Peter Balogh.

"The Streak"

Beginning in December 2006, The Double Yellow set an unprecedented record for wins in performance competitions as a rock group.[7] Beginning on Thursday, December 14, and ending after their official retirement from group competition on April 14, 2007, after their win at the 2007 New England Music Competition and Festival, the Double Yellow competed in and placed first at six local, state, and region-wide performance competitions. (For a full list see “Awards” section below.) “The Streak”, as it has become known to fans, helped push The Double Yellow to notoriety in the New England area, but eventually ended as the group saw fit to focus solely on preparing for their debut album, Everything & Nothing.

Everything & Nothing

After a brief stint touring region-wide visiting locations like the Paradise Rock Club, 242 Main, The Savant Project, Boston University, the University of New Hampshire, the University of Vermont, Brandeis University, and New Hampshire’s Rockin’ Ribfest Festival, the Double Yellow took a leave of absence from performance to finish writing and begin recording their debut album, Everything & Nothing, with noted producer Brian Coombes (Godsmack, Another Animal, Supertramp). The album was tracked and mixed at Rocking Horse Studio in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, and mastered by Gerry Putnam (NBC, RCA) at Cedarhouse Sound in North Sutton, New Hampshire.[8] The album was officially released to the public on December 20, 2008, at The Double Yellow’s CD release party at Tupelo Music Hall in Londonderry, New Hampshire.[9]
