Farwestern region of Nepal is also known as Doti (Devnagari; डोटी ) or Doti region. The name Dotigarh ( डोटीगढ़ ) has been used in the Jagar (folk tales; जागर ). This region is situated between River Kali boarding to the Uttarakhand in the west and Karnali river on the east. Doti division covers the nine District of Seti and Mahakali Zone, four in Mahakali and five in Seti Zone respectively. They are Darchula District, Baitadi District, Dadeldhura District, kanchanpur district, Doti District, Kailali District, Bajhang District, Bajura District and Achham District. Kailali and Kanchanpur District are Terai districts.

Origin of the name
The name Doti is believed to be originating form the word ‘Dovati’ which means the land area between the confluences of the two rivers.
Other view is original name of the Doti was DEVATAVI= DEV+AATAVI or AALAYA (Dev meaning the Hindu god and aatavi meaning the place of re-creation, place of attaining a meditation in Sanskrit)
Doti was a ancient kingdom of Uttarakhand of India and far western region of Nepal which was formed after disintegration of Katyuri kingdom of Uttarakhand and far western region of Nepal during 13th century. Doti was one of eight different princely states formed after the kingdom broken and others were 1.Baijnath-Katyuri, 2.Dwarahat, 3. Doti, 4. Baramandal, 5.Askot, 6. Sira, 7. Sora, 8. Sui (Kali kumaon). Kingdom had broken down because of the invasion of. Khas kings Ashoka challa and Krachalla from Karnali Zone (Dullu) of Nepal in 1191 and 1223 respectively'. Later on, the whole land between Ramganga on the west (Uttarakhand) and the Karnali on the east (which divides far western region to other part Nepal) came under Raikas after the origin of Raikas of Katyuris in Doti. "Brahma Dev Mandi" at Kanchanpur District of Mahakali Zone was established by Katyuri king Brahma Dev.
Raikas of Doti
Niranjan Malla Dev was the founder of Doti Kingdom around 13th century after a fall of Katyuris Kingdom. He was the son of Last Katyuris of united Katyuris kingdom. Kings of Doti were known as Raikas (also known as Rainka Maharaj). Later on Raikas, after overthrow Khas Malla of Karnali Zone, were able to form a strong Raikas Kingdom in Far Western Region and Kumaun which was called Doti. So far, the historical evidence of following Raikas have been discovered;
Niranjan Malla Dev (Founder of Doti Kingdom), Nagi Malla (1238), Ripu Malla (1279), Nirai Pal (1353 may be of Askot and his historical evidence of 1354 A.D has been found in Almoda), Nag Malla (1384), Dhir Malla (1400), Ripu Malla (1410), Anand Malla (1430), Balinarayan Malla (not known), Sansar Malla (1442), Kalyan Malla (1443), Suratan Malla (1478), Kriti Malla(1482), Prithivi Malla (1488), Medini Jay Malla (1512), Ashok Malla (1517), Raj Malla (1539), Arjun Malla/Sahi (not known but he was ruling Sira as Malla and Doti as Shahi), Bhupati Malla/Shahi (1558), Sagaram Shahi (1567), Hari Malla/Shahi (1581 Last Raikas King of Sira and adjoining part of Nepal), Rudra Shahi (1630), Vikram Shahi (1642), Mandhata Shahi (1671), Raghunath Shahi (1690), Hari Shahi (1720), Krishna Shahi (1760), Deep Shahi (1785), Prithivi pati Shahi (1790, 'he had fought against Nepali Ruler (Gorkhali Ruler) with British in 1814 A.D').
The Historic place of War between Doti Kingdom and Nepal (Gorkha kingdom) during period of Gorkha Expansion at 1790, according to the history of Nepal, is NARI-DANG which is at the bank of Seti River and the Dumrakot was the base of Doti Kingdom for fighting against Gorkhali.

'DR. K. I. SINGH 'born in Doti (Ex-Prim Minister of Nepal.(real name Indra Jeet Shahi) Later on he proclaimed himself as Kunwar Indra Jeet Singh and became famous by this short name DR. K. I. SINGH. He was a revolutionary Leader formed revolutionary armed force to fight against Rana Regim of Nepal. He was founder president of United Democratic Party. He died 1984 at Bangkok. Mr. K B Shahi, born in Doti, (Ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs), well-known diplomat and long serving Foreign Minister of Nepal during 1980. He was also Secretary General of Dr. K. I. SINGH's party United Democratic Party in 1960 and became president of the party 1990. He died at Kathmandu 2009. Mr. Dan Bahadur Shahi, born in Doti, (Ex-Minister of Home Affairs of Nepal) a long-serving bureaucrat of Nepal later turned politician and become Minister in 2003. Mr. Sher Bahadur Shahi born in Doti, (Ex-election Commissioner of Nepal) He was a top bureaucrat of Nepal, served many important portfolios in government and Secretary of Home Ministry. He daied at Kathmandu 1985. Mr. Kalendra Bikram Shahi, born in Doti, Dumrakot; Social political activist of Nepal, he is well known in the field of diplomatic and international relations and also known in field of literature. Mr. Yegey Jit Shah. Born in Doti, Dumrakot; The youngest son of Late Rt. Hon. Ex-Prim Minister Dr. K. I. Singh. Became Member of Nepalese parliament, elected from Marchawar area of Rupandehi, Bhirahawa, Lumbini Zone of Nepal. This Marchawar area was the main base camp of Late Dr. K. I. Singh to train the military force for fighting against Rana regime of Nepal during 1948 to 1950. Dr. K. I. Sing was representing Nepalese parliament continuously until his death from the same area Marchawar, Rupandehi. Once he was elected unopposed from Doti in 1970.
Language and culture
Dotiyali or Dotyali (Also Doteli) and Kumauni [1] is the local language spoken in Doti region or far western region of Nepal. Dotiyali which is similar to Kumauni language is one of language of Indo-European family. According to Rahul Sankrityayan Dotiyali is the dialect of Kumauni language which was brought in Doti by section of Katyuri dynasty of kumaoun which had ruled over Doti till 1790. Doti Kingdom was formed after the Katyuri kingdom had broken down in to eight different princely states of different section of Katyuris. But in Nepal it is consider as Nepali dialect though Local intellectuals and people speaking Dotiyali language are increasingly demanding that their language be recognized as one of the other national languages of Nepal. Mainly Gora (Gamra) Kumauni holi, Bishpati, Harela, Raksha Bandhab (Rakhi) Dashin, Diwali, Makar Sankranti etc. festival observed in the region. Traditional Dance and Songs Chhaliya, Bhada, Jhora Chapeli, Rung Culture of Rung people (Sauka), Baira song, Deuda and Jagar are the part of culture. Jagara, tales of bravery is most important culture in Doti since Katyuri period. Jhusia Damai of Baskot of Baitadi District ( stayed in Dharchula India) was famous Jagar singer.

जागेश्वर-बागेश्वर, कोटेश्वर, कबलेश्वर में,
हरी हरिद्वार में, बद्री-केदार में,
गुरु का गुरुखण्ड में, ऎसा गुरु गोरखी नाथ जो छन,
अगास का छूटा छन-पताल का फूटा छन,
सों बरस की पलक में बैठी छन,
सौ मण का भसम का गवाला जो लागीरईए
गुरु का नौणिया गात में,
कि रुमनी- झुमनी संध्या का बखत में,
सूर्जामुखी शंख बाजनौ,उर्धामुखी नाद बाजनौ।
कंसासुरी थाली बाजनै, तामौ-बिजयसार को नगाड़ो में तुमरी नौबत जो लागि रै,
म्यारा पंचनाम देबोऽऽऽऽऽऽ.........!
अहाः तै बखत का बीच में,
नौ लाख तारों की जोत जो जलि रै,
नौ नाथन की, नाद जो बाजि रै,
नौखण्डी धरती में, सातों समुन्दर में,
अगास पाताल में॥
कि ऎसी पड़नी संध्या का बखत में,
नौ लाख गुरु भैरी, कनखल बाड़ी में,
बार साल सिता रुनी, बार साल ब्यूंजा रुनी,
तै तो गुरु, खाक धारी, गुरु भेखधारी,
टेकधारी, गुरु जलंथरी नाथ, गुरु मंछदरी नाथ छन, नंगा निर्बाणी छन, खड़ा तपेश्वरी छन,
शिव का सन्यासी छन, राम का बैरागी छन,
कि यसी रुमनी-झुमनी संध्या का बखत में,
जो गुरु त्रिलोकी नाथ छन, चारै गुरु चौरंगी नाथ छन,
बारै गुरु बरभोगी नाथ छन, संध्या की आरती जो करनई।
गुरु वृहस्पति का बीच में।
.......कि तै बखत का बीच में बिष्णु लोक में जलैकार-थलैकार रैगो,
कि बिष्णु की नारी लक्ष्मी कि काम करनैं,
पयान भरै। सिरा ढाक दिनै। पयां लोट ल्हिने,
स्वामी की आरती करनै।
तब बिष्णु नाभी बै कमल जो पैद है गो,
तै दिन का बीच में कमल बटिक पंचमुखी ब्रह्मा पैड भो,
जो ब्रह्मा-ले सृष्टि रचना करी, तीन ताला धरती बड़ै,
नौ खण्डी गगन बड़ा छि।
....कि तै बखत का बीच में बाटो बटावैल ड्यार लि राखौ,
घासिक घस्यार बंद है रौ, पानि को पन्यार बंद है रौ,
धतियैकि धात बंद है रै, बिणियेकि बिणै बंद है रै,
ब्रह्मा वेद चलन बंद है रो, धरम्क पैन चरण बंद है गो,
क्षेत्री-क खण्ड चलन बन्द है गो, गायिक चरण बन्द है गो,
पंछीन्क उड़्न बंद है गो, अगासिक चडि़ घोल में भै गईं,
सुलक्षिणी नारी घर में पंचमुखी दीप जो जलण फैगो........
......कि तै बखत का बीच में संध्या जो झुलनें,
दिल्ली दरखड़ में, पांडव किला में,
जां पांच भै पाण्डवनक वास रै गो,
संध्या जो झूलनें इजूऽऽऽ हरि हरिद्वार में, बद्री केदार में,
गया-काशी,प्रयाग, मथुरा-वृन्दावन, गुवर्धन पहाड़ में,
तपोबन, रिखिकेश में, लक्ष्मण झूला में,
मानसरोबर में नीलगिरि पर्वत में......।
तै तो बखत का बीच में, संध्या जो झुलनें इजू हस्तिनापुर में,
कलकत्ता का देश में, जां मैय्या कालिका रैंछ,
कि चकरवाली-खपरवाली मैय्या जो छू, आंखन की अंधी छू,
कानन की काली छू, जीभ की लाटी छू,
गढ़ भेटे, गढ़देवी है जैं।
सोर में बैठें, भगपती है जैं,
हाट में बैठें कालिका जो बणि जैं।
पुन्यागिरि में बैठें माता बणि जैं,
हिंगलाज में भैटें भवाणी जो बणि जैं।
....कि संध्यान जो पड़नें, बागेश्वर भूमि में, जां मामू बागीनाथ छन।
जागेशवर भूमि में बूढा जागीनाथ रुनी,
जो बूढा जागी नाथन्ल इजा, तितीस कोटि द्याप्तन कें सुना का घांट चढ़ायी छ,
सौ मण की धज चढ़ा छी।
संध्या जो पड़ि रै इजाऽऽऽ मृत्युंद्यो में, जां मृत्यु महाराज रुनी, काल भैरव रुनी।
तै बखत का बीच में संध्या जो झुलनें,
सुरजकुंड में, बरमकुंड में, जोशीमठ-ऊखीमठ में,
तुंगनाथ, पंच केदार, पंच बद्री में, जटाधारी गंग में,
गंगा-गोदावरी में, गंगा-भागीरथी में, छड़ोंजा का ऎड़ी में,
झरु झांकर में, जां मामू सकली सैम राजा रुनी,
डफौट का हरु में, जां औन हरु हरपट्ट है जां, जान्हरु छरपट्ट है जां.......।
गोरियाऽऽऽऽऽऽ दूदाधारी छै, कृष्ण अबतारी छै।
मामू को अगवानी छै, पंचनाम द्याप्तोंक भांणिज छै,
तै बखत का बीच में गढी़ चंपावती में हालराई राज जो छन,
अहाऽऽऽऽ! रजा हालराई घर में संतान न्हेंतिन,
के धान करन कूनी राजा हालराई.......!
तै बखत में राजा हालराई सात ब्या करनी.....संताना नाम पर ढुंग लै पैद नि भै,
तै बखत में रजा हालराई अठुं ब्या जो करनु कुनी,
राजैल गंगा नाम पर गध्यार नै हाली, द्याप्ता नाम पर ढुंग जो पुजिहाली,......
अहा क्वे राणि बटिक लै पुत्र पैद नि भै.......
राज कै पुत्रक शोकै रैगो
एऽऽऽऽऽ राजौ- क रौताण छिये......!
एऽऽऽऽऽ डोटी गढ़ो क राज कुंवर जो छिये,
अहाऽऽऽऽऽ घटै की क्वेलारी, घटै की क्वेलारी।
आबा लागी गौछौ गांगू, डोटी की हुलारी॥

ए...... गांगू.....! हरिद्वार जै बेर गुरु की सेवा टहल जो करि दिनु कूंछे......!
अहा.... तै बखत का बीच में, कनखल में गुरु गोरखीनाथ जो भै रईं......!
ए...... गुरु कें सिरां ढोक जो दिना, पयां लोट जो लिना.....!

Moguls invasion Over Raikas Kingdom
During a period of Akbar 16th century Moguls had attacked over Raikas of Doti. They invaded Ajemru, capital of Raikas Kingdom. Ajemeru is now at Dadeldhura District of far western region of Nepal. Hussain Khan named army chief of Akbar residing at Lakhnow had led the attack.
