Donões is a small parish/village nestled in the northernmost part of Portugal referred to as tras os montes (behind the mountains). It is 1 of 36 parishes/villages of Montalegre. It is also the closest to Montalegre.
Donões is known for its flowing springs, wheat fields, and farming community. Many of its residents have migrated to the larger cities of Portugal (Oporto, Lisbon, Chaves) and other countries (USA, France, Spain, Switzerland, Brazil). This has brought the most recent population total to 72 residents.
Many of its past residents have vacation homes that they visit annually and take part in village traditions that include wheat harvesting and the Senhora da Peneda festival where their Catholic faith is celebrated.
