Serb Novak Djokovic and Spaniard Rafael Nadal are tennis players that are engaged in a modern-day tennis rivalry. They have played each other 29 times with the Spaniard having the advantage 16 to 13 in match wins.^[1]

The first ever meeting occurred between the two at the 2006 French Open in the quarterfinals, where Nadal prevailed. Their first final appearance came at the 2007 Indian Wells Masters tournament, where Nadal won the event, this was just the second time they met on the ATP Tour. Djokovic's first win was in the quarterfinals of the 2007 Miami Masters in their third meeting.

This rivalry is classified as part of the 2010s "Trivalry" consisting of rivalries between Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer. Nadal openly stated that Djokovic is the only player to have ever gotten into his head as he did during his 2011 streak.^[2][3][4] Djokovic is the only player to have 10 or more match wins against Nadal. Djokovic is also the only player to defeat Nadal on a surface other than grass in a Grand Slam final, and the second player to defeat Nadal in more than one Grand Slam (Federer being the other). Nadal's camp openly stated that Djokovic was a new threat that was much different than Federer and much more devastating to Nadal's game. This was proven true then Djokovic defeated Nadal in consecutive clay matches (both being finals) in Madrid and Rome. This marked the first time Nadal looked and felt unsure of himself on his favorite surface and it carried to the French Open, where he stated he did not feel like the favorite and he thought he would not win the title (implying that he would lose to Djokovic in the finals, but Djokovic lost to Federer in the semis).

Djokovic and Nadal have a very respectable rivalry; the two have been good friends for a long time. They have the same manager and are often seen together in restaurants or while golfing on tour.

Commentators Dick Enberg, John McEnroe, and Mary Carillo have said that this rivalry has the potential of being the greatest rivalry in tennis history due to the number of matches already played between the two, the quality of the matches, and the age difference of only one year.^[5] It should also be noted that the two players are currently 24 (Djokovic) and 25 (Nadal), meaning that they are in their prime years.

History

2006

The first meeting between the two, which was the only one for this year, was at the French Open (Roland Garros) in the Quarterfinals. The victory went to Nadal in this match via a retirement from Djokovic after Nadal took the first two sets in fours in a matter of 114 minutes.^[6]

2007

In 2007, the pair met seven times, Nadal winning five of them.

The first encounter took place at the finals of the Indian Wells Masters. This was Djokovic's first Masters 1000 final whereas Nadal was bidding for his 6th. Nadal won the match easily, in a matter of 94 minutes.^[7] Djokovic however got his revenge the following week, defeating Nadal for the first time in the quarter-finals of the Miami Masters in just 97 minutes. Djokovic would go on to win his first Masters 1000 title, defeating Canas in the final.^[8]

The pair met twice during the summer clay-court season, Nadal continuing his dominance on clay. He defeated Djokovic en-route to the title in the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters^[9] and went on to do the same on his way to a second Grand Slam title, at the French Open a month later. Nadal defeated Djokovic, who was playing his first Grand Slam semi-final.^[10] They then met for the first time on grass, in the semi-finals of Wimbledon. After having split the first two sets, Djokovic was forced to concede the match to Nadal on a retirement.^[11] Djokovic had previously played a 5 hour epic with Marcos Baghdatis in the QF's, two days before. Nadal would lose in the final for the second consecutive year to Federer.

At the Canada Masters in Montreal, Djokovic scored his second victory over Nadal, defeating the Spaniard in the semi's en-route to winning his second Masters 1000 title.^[12] This tournament marked a breakthrough of sorts for Djokovic. He became the first player to have defeated the top three ranked players in one tournament since Boris Becker in 1994, defeating Roddick, Nadal and Federer in consecutive matches.^[13] Djokovic also became the first player to have defeated Federer and Nadal in the same tournament, and the second to have defeated both Federer and Nadal since they became the top two players in the world. He would go on to reach his first grand slam final, at the U.S. Open a month later.

The final encounter between the two during the year was in the round robin phase Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai. Nadal won easily.^[14], Djokovic visibly fatigued from a long season and would go on to lose all three of his round robin matches.

2008

Djokovic and Nadal met six times in 2008, Nadal improving his career advantage against Djokovic to 10–4, winning four of their encounters.

The early part of the year saw Djokovic looming large to overtake Nadal in the rankings. The Serb started the year with a bang, winning his first grand slam title at the Australian Open. This was the first Grand Slam that neither Federer nor Nadal had won a Grand Slam since the 2005 Australian Open, ending their combined all-time record of 11 consecutive titles. Djokovic would then go on to win the third Masters 1000 of his career at Indian Wells Masters, defeating Nadal en route in the semis in their first meeting in the year.^[15]

Things would change however come the start of the clay-court season. This would be the start of a 32-match winning streak for Nadal, winning two grand slam titles on the way. Nadal defeated Djokovic in the semis of the Hamburg Masters, Nadal going on to win the tournament but Djokovic however winning his first set of Nadal on clay in this encounter.^[16] In their third consecutive meeting at the French Open semi-finals, a dominant Nadal defeated Djokovic in the semis, going on to win his fourth consecutive French Open title without dropping a set. With this, he tied Björn Borg's all-time record.^[17] They then met in their second final at the Queen's Club in London, Nadal winning his first grass-court title at the expense of Djokovic in the finals in straight sets. Djokovic had served for the second set.^[18]

Coming into their fifth encounter of the year at the Cincinnati Masters, Nadal had won his first Wimbledon crown and was coming off a title in Toronto the week before. Djokovic's form however had deteriorated, having suffered a second round defeat at Wimbledon and losing for the first time to Murray in Toronto. Djokovic however became the man to end Nadal's 32 match winning streak, defeating the Spaniard easily in the semis.^[19] He would go on to lose in the finals for the second consecutive week to Murray. The sixth and final battle of the year came at the Beijing Olympics in the semi-finals, Nadal winning the match. He would go on to win the gold medal.

Djokovic ended the year on a strong note, defeating Davydenko to win the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup. Nadal ended the year as No. 1 for the first time in his career.

2009

They met seven times in 2009. Nadal won the first four of their encounters, Djokovic going on to win the last three.

The pair met several times during on clay and matches involving them became the highlights of the clay-court season. They met for the first time in a clay-court final at the Monte Carlo Masters, Nadal winning a closely contested three-setter and his 5th consecutive title at the event.^[20] With the no. 3 ranking at risk, Djokovic had to defend his title at the Rome Masters to avoid dropping to No. 4 in the world. He successfully made it to the final, but lost to Nadal in straight sets.^[21]

They then met for a third consecutive tournament on clay, in the semis of the Madrid Masters. In what was arguably the match of the year, Nadal won a gruelling encounter 3–6, 7–6, 7–6, saving three match points in the process.^[22] The match, at 4 hours and 3 minutes, was the longest three-set singles match on the ATP World Tour in the Open Era.^[23] The match was voted the best match of the year by fans and critics alike. Djokovic admitted afterwards that it took him a long time to get over this loss. With most expecting both to possibly reach the finals of the French Open, having had several classics during the entirety of the clay-court season, both suffered disappointing losses in Paris. Djokovic lost in the third round to Kohlschreiber and Nadal sensationally suffered his first ever defeat at Roland Garros to Soderling.

During the US Open series, Djokovic defeated Nadal for the first time that year at the Cincinnati Masters in a mere 92 minutes.^[24] He would go on to lose the final to Federer. Djokovic then won his first Masters 1000 title of the year, crushing Nadal in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open in Paris, hitting 31 winners in the match.^[25] The pair then had their final meeting of the year, at the ATP World Tour Finals in London. Djokovic won the match, going 2–1 in the round robin phase.^[26] Nadal on the other hand had lost all three of his round robin matches, failing to win a single set.

2010

They met only twice in 2010, and Nadal won both their encounters .

Djokovic and Nadal faced off with each other for the first time in a Grand Slam final. Nadal won the match in four sets, thus becoming the youngest player to complete a Career Grand Slam. This match took 223 minutes to get finished.^[27] Djokovic had defeated Federer in a 5 set epic semifinal, after having saved two match two days prior.

The second encounter came during the Round Robin stage of the ATP World Tour finals, where Nadal dispatched Djokovic in two sets. Nadal would go on to reach his first ever season-ending final, losing to Federer in the final.^[28]

2011

2011 marked Djokovic's rise to the top of the game. The pair met 6 times, all in finals. Djokovic won all six encounters, including two Grand Slam finals. This marked the first time that Djokovic had managed to win the majority of his matches with Nadal in a calendar year. Matches between two have proven to be among the best matches of the year.

Coming into their first encounter of the year at the Indian Wells Masters, Djokovic had not lost a match the entire year, winning two titles including his second Major title at the Australian Open. Nadal on the other hand had not played a match having suffered a lost to Ferrer in Melbourne where he was hampered by an injury. Djokovic continued his fine winning form by beating Nadal to win his second Indian Wells title and extending his winning streak to 20 consecutive matches. It also marked Djokovic's first victory over Nadal in a final, and his first having lost the first set to Nadal.^[29]

Two weeks later, the pair met again in the finals of the Miami Masters. Yet again Nadal took the first set, only to lose the next two straight sets to Djokovic in a match that lasted three hours and 21 minutes. In doing so, Djokovic became only the third player to win the Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Miami Masters triple.^[30]

Djokovic and Nadal clased twice during the clay-court spring. In the final of the Madrid Masters, Djokovic scored his first ever victory over Nadal on clay, in straight sets. He became the first person to defeat Nadal without conceding a set since 2008.^[31] He managed the same feat at the Rome Masters, defeating Nadal yet again on clay in straight sets.^[32] This made him the second player to qualify for the season ending World Tour Finals before the French Open, the other being Nadal.^[33]

Djokovic's sensational start to the year however came to halt at the French Open where his 43-match winning streak was ended by Federer in the semis. Nadal would go on to win the title, defeating Federer in the final.

Djokovic and Nadal met in a final for the fifth time in the year at Wimbledon, arguably their biggest encounter of the year. In a 2 hour 28 minute contest, Djokovic overcame Nadal in four sets, winning his first Wimbledon title, third Grand Slam title and first outside the Australian Open. This win also ended Nadal's 20 match winning streak at Wimbledon.^[34] They met for a second consecutive final at the US Open, a rematch of the final from the previous year which Nadal prevailed in. In a match considered to be the best match of the year thus far, Djokovic won his third Grand Slam title of the year, overcoming Nadal again in four gruelling sets. The match took a lung-busting 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete, which both players visibly fatigued by the end of it. By winning the U.S. Open, Djokovic became only the 7th man in the Open Era to win 3 Major titles in a year. ^[35]

Having never defeated Nadal in final ever before, Djokovic has now defeated Nadal in 6 consecutive finals. This year also marked the first time he was able to defeat Nadal on clay and the first time he has been able to defeat Nadal in a Grand Slam tournament. He also becomes the first player to have defeated Nadal 6 consecutive times and the first to have 10 or more victories over Nadal over the course of their careers.

Djokovic and Nadal have played 29 times to date; Nadal leads 16–13. In Grand Slams, Nadal leads 5–2. In best-of-five matches, Nadal leads 6–2. They have never played a five-setter.

Skill Comparison

Djokovic and Nadal have many similarities in their playing styles. Both rely on their foot speed to get balls back into play, while Djokovic's defence relies more on his agility, Nadal's strength is often the deciding factor when lifting balls over the net from difficult angles. Both players are patient during rallies, but both force the play at crucial moments. A key difference is that Djokovic hits a flatter ball than Nadal, who plays with more topspin. Nadal's attacking game is more heavily reliant on his forehand, while Djokovic has more of a tendency to inject pace into a rally with his backhand. Nadal's forehand is a stroke that allows him a very high margin for error. It has a high net clearance, and its heavy spin brings the ball back into play even when hit very hard. Because of this, Nadal can confidently use powerful forehands to dictate play on crucial points. Djokovic's strokes have a lower margin for error, due to their relative lack of spin and lower net clearance. In this particular match-up, Djokovic compensates for his higher risk strokes by seizing the initiative early in rallies (often straight away with his return of serve), therefore keeping Nadal off balance.

Djokovic and Nadal hit very different serves. Djokovic is taller and hits the ball with a flatter trajectory. Nadal's serve, although powerful at times, tends to primarily deceive opponents with its heavy spin. Both are prone to double faulting on serve. Djokovic's return of serve is considered superior to Nadal's. Djokovic stands closer to the baseline and makes contact with the ball earlier when returning than Nadal usually does.
