History

The tribe is connected with the Janjua Rajputs, and are descendants of Raja Dhami Khan Janjua.

The Dhamial are of both Raja and Jat status, as are many tribes of the Pothohar region.[1] Historically, members of a Rajput tribe did not touch the plough, but employed other communities to till their fields. The Dhamial Rajputs that took to agriculture became part of the Jat community bearing the title 'chaudhry' meaning baron/landlord (jagirdar). This title was conferred to the muslim rajputs by the sultan of delhi. The Dhamial account for themselves as having come originally from Ghazni to the Sialkot District, from whence they went to Dhamiak (Jhelum Tehsil) where dhami khan built a fort. The area is known as dhami qila (dhamakna or kot dhamiak). They Ruled the area and fought a fierce war with malik qadd khan gakhar.

They are chiefly found in the Rawalpindi District but also in Gujrat District, Jhelum District and Attock District of the Punjab and Mirpur District of Azad Kashmir. In Azad Kashmir, the Dhamial are the second largest rajput-jat tribe in the state.

The Dhamial have no connection with the Dhanyal ,the two tribes being quite distinct.[2]

Villages

In Jhelum District, the Dhamial's are found in Kotla faqir, Mamuri Dhamial, Dheri Dhamial and Rakha Dhamial. The town of Dhamiak and mohra lal remains a centre of the dhamials in Jhelum.

In Gujar Khan Tehsil, they are found in Dolmi Dhamial and Dhamial. In Rawalpindi Tehsil, they are found in Khail Dhamyal and Sher Dhamial villages. In Kallar Syedan Tehsil, Sahib Dhamial is an important village.

In Azad Kashmir, they are found in Dehri Dhamial and Nakkah dhamial.
