The Matyal or sometimes pronounced as Mathyal are a Jat tribe, found mainly in Jhelum District of the Punjab Province of Pakistan, as well as the adjoining Mirpur and Bhimber Districts of Azad Kashmir. They are also found in the capital of Pakistan, Islamabad. According to the census of India 1911, they numbered 1,147 in Jhelum District.[1]

The Matyals are Muslims in west Punjab and in east Punjab they are followers of Sikh faith.

The Mathyal are descended from Baba Matha Khan, a Rajput who lived around the sixteenth century. They were first settled in the village Malot. There is still a hamlet or dhoke which is called Dhoke Matyal. From village Malot, these Matyal spread to other parts of District Jhelum. Most of the Jat Matyal add suffix Chaudhry to their names, but some Matyal in the Pothohar region ( Sohawa and Gujar Khan) prefer to add Raja to their names.
