Professional career

Lucca has been active in the investment advisor field since 1986. Under company founder John Rhoads, he became a vice president of the forerunner of Rhoads Lucca Capital, Dallas/Rhoads/Associates, in 1988. At Dallas/Rhoads Lucca was instrumental in transitioning the firm from commission-based to fee-only structure. This also included transitioning the firm from financial planning to a new focus on investment management.

A longtime client advocate of fee-only investment management, Lucca also became noted for his contrarian approach to the business, refusing to obtain a securities license that involved commission-based compensation, and instead moving directly fee-only compensation as a Registered Investment Advisor.[3]

During the 1993-94 school year, Lucca served as an adjunct faculty member for the Denver-based College for Financial Planning, teaching the Investments section of the Certified Financial Planner credential at Brookhaven College in Farmers Branch, Texas.

Awards and accolades

In 1989, Lucca obtained the Certified Financial Planner designation and then voluntarily relinquished it in 2001, citing philosophical differences with the investment approach promoted by the governing organization. Specifically, believing the investment philosophy fundamentally did not protect his clients. Lucca believes the bear market, which began in 2000, vindicated this decision.[1]

Lucca is a former board member of the National Association of Active Investment Managers (NAAIM), serving as the association's president in 2000. Also in 2000 Lucca was named one of five "Ace Advisors" in the United States by Ticker magazine in the "Best Contribution to Industry" category.[4]

In 2007, Lucca founded and serves as Director of the US Pilot Financial Association, a private financial association for licensed commercial airline pilots. The association was founded in direct response to a survey of pilots that produced over 5,000 responses, with an overwhelming majority favoring creating such an association.[5]

Lucca is quoted regularly in Barron's, Investor's Business Daily, The Wall Street Journal, and other publications specializing in the financial sector.[6] He is the author of the upcoming book The Great Retirement Formula. The book is scheduled for publication in spring 2011.

Lucca resides in the Lancaster, Pennsylvania, area.
