Olympic medal record Men's athletics Competitor for United Kingdom Gold 1912 Stockholm 4x100 m relay David William Jacobs (30 April 1888 in Cardiff, Wales – 6 June 1976 in Aberconwy, Wales), was a Welsh athlete.
Olympic Gold Medal 1912, Stockholm
At the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Jacobs won a Gold medal as the first leg in the British 4x100 m relay team, in spite of finishing second behind the United States in the semifinals. The United States was later disqualified for a fault in passing the baton, the same mistake made in the finals by the world record holder and main favourite German team.
Jacobs also competed in the 100 m and 200 m individual events, but was eliminated in the semifinals of each.
His interest in athletics was aroused by watching the 1908 Olympic Games in London and he joined Herne Hill Harriers at the end of the summer. Although many times Welsh champion, he never succeeded in winning an AAA title. He died suddenly in his native Wales while on holiday from his London home.
