Languages

The unity of the Choiseul languages is supported by a 2008 analysis of the Austronesian Basic Vocabulary Database[1] However, that did not support the traditional classification into East and West branches. Marovo and Hoava, "East" and "West", and classified together with 90% probability, and together with two other "West" languages with full support. Since only four languages were included in the database, the overall structure of the family is unclear.

  • Simbo (Simbo Island)
  • Roviana–Marovo
    • Roviana (New Georgia Island)
    • Hoava–Marovo
      • Marovo (New Georgia Island)
      • Hoava (New Georgia Island)

The other languages are Vangunu (on Vangunu Island), traditionally classified as East; and Duke (Kolambanggara Island), Ghanongga (Ranongga Island), Kusaghe (New Georgia Island), Lungga (Ranongga Island), and Ughele (North Rendova Island), all traditionally classified as West.

In addition, the extinct Kazukuru language (including two possible dialects Guliguli and Dororo) was probably one of the New Georgia languages.
