2.28 Daegu democracy movement broke out had South Korean presidential election, March 1960 ahead at the period ofSyngman Rhee's government, February 28th, 1960, for resist to the Liberal Party's dictatorship. After this movement, 3.15 Masan democracy movement broke out, and Daegu democracy movement was became the main cause of the April Revolution.

Beginning

February 28th, 1960 was Democratic Party's president and vice president candidate Chang Myon's campaign day and Sunday. At that day, the authorities commanded students to go to school for not to come to Democratic Party's campaign rally, so it was the source of Daegu democracy movement.

Summary

Kyeongbuk High School ordered students to go to school February 28th, 1960, Sunday. The reason of this was advance the midterm date take place on March. Other 7 public high school also ordered students to go to school. Even some reasons were ridiculous, like hare hunting, seeing movie. February 27th, 1960, at the chairman of student government of Kyeongbuk High School Lee Dae-wo's home sited Daegu Dongindong, 8 students from Kyeongbuk High School, Daegu High School, Kyungpook National University High School organized demonstrate for protesting unfair action to ordering students to go to school on Sunday, and they also made a resolution. February 28th 1:00 p.m. in the process of 800 students going to the provincial government building via Daegu Banwoldang station, more students from other schools join this demonstrate. When they met Chang Myon was going to his campaign rally, they cry hurrah.

The governor of those days called students "They are all the Communists," but citizens were attacked or stopped police beating students, or clapping for them, and most ladies hid students for hiding hat under the skirt hem.

1200 students joined this movement, and 120 students were arrested by the police, but police worried about spreading demonstrate, so they released most of the students except some leaders of this demonstrate.

Resolution

"Million students, if you have a blood, then stand up for our divine right without any hesitation. Student's red blood romping now at this moment, struggling until end of our life for defeating injustice that betrays justice is our spirit, is appeal to reason based on sense of justice." February 28th, 1960, 12:55 p.m. the chairman of student government of Kyeongbuk High School Lee Dae-wo and so on ascended podium and read this resolution with an enraged voice, then highly-elated students shouted and clapped. Torch of anti-dictatorship blazed up firstly in Korea like this.

Main Agent of This Movement

The main agent of Daegu democracy movement is high school students, and it was a student movement prepared planned group demonstration's requirements of the racial movement. It was the movement followed 6.10 Movement, Gwangju Student Independence Movement, and it was became the first of the students movements broke out at the postwar period. Especially it was the main cause of the April Revolution, it made the crucial chance to destroy the dictatorial government and had an effect on the opposition movement for establishing diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan and pro-democracy movements broke out after then.

Daegu soon turned into a scene of wild excitement filled with crying of democratization. At this period, people got raged of Liberal Party's maladministration like Busan Government Crisis(1952), Constitutional Amendment rounding off to the nearest integer(1954), The Accident of the Progressive Party(1958), and closed to South Korean presidential election, March 1960.

Memorial Affairs

  • April 10th, 1961, 2.28 Daegu democracy movement monument was founded in Myeongdeok station by donation of Daegu citizen under Maeil newspaper's leading.
  • February 28th, 1990, 2.28 Daegu democracy movement monument moved to Duryupark from Myeongdeok station.
  • February 28th, 1999, Moon Hi-gab, the mayor of Daegu declared to make 2.28 democracy movement park at the land of Daegu Joongang Elementary School sited in Jung-gu Gongpteongdong, Daegu.
