Dactylotum bicolor, known as the "barber-pole grasshopper" or the "rainbow grasshopper", lives from southern Saskatchewan south to Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, western and central Texas and into Mexico.

These brightly colored grasshoppers live along the western edge of the Great Plains. Adults are active from mid- to late summer in desert grasslands with gravelly, sparsely vegetated soils and occasionally in alfalfa fields. They feed on a wide variety of desert plants, especially grasses and low broad-leaf plants.
