Cyprus will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 and selected their entry through a national final, organised by Cypriot broadcaster Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC). After an open call to performers to submit proposals, ten entries were shortlisted for the 7 February national final. Deep Zone and their song "Play" were disqualified after the song was found to have been unofficially released before the final, breaching the contest's rules and leaving nine to compete in the final. Welsh singer Jon Lilygreen & The Islanders were chosen as the Cypriot entry on 7 February with their song "Life Looks Better in Spring" and will compete in the second half of the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2010.

Selection process

CyBC launched its Eurovision selection process on 5 October 2009 when they released details on the televised national final titled Epilogi tis Kipriakis Simmetohis to be held in early 2010. Until 27 November, Cypriots and European citizens living in Cyprus for more than two years were permitted to submit candidate entries to CyBC for the competition. A seven-member jury then shortlisted twenty songs, with ten progressing to the televised show.[1][2] The winner was decided by the votes of a five-member professional jury as well as a public televote, with each having a 50% influence on the final result.[1][2] The final will be held on 2 February 2010.[3] On 24 December CyBc decided the running order of the final, as well as announcing details for the Cypriot selection for the 2011 Contest.[4]

Participants

Seventy entries were received by CyBC.[3] The names of the shortlisted ten competing songs and their lyricists were released on 12 December 2009. According to the seven-member selection jury, the quality of the submitted music was high for this year's contest. The songwriters included Constantinos Christoforou, who has previously represented Cyprus three times at Eurovision (in 1996, 2002 as a member of One, and 2005), and Mike Connaris, writer of Cyprus' 2004 entry "Stronger Every Minute".[5]

Christoforou and Evagoras Evagorou performed in the contest, with Christoforou performing his own entry "Angel", and Evagorou performing "I'm Gonna Be".[5][6] Further artists confirmed in December included 18 year-old Nicole Paparistodemou, who will perform the Mike Connaris composition "Like A Woman",[7] and Armenian Cypriot singer Hovig Demirjian, a current participant on the Greek version of The X Factor.[8] Constantinos Kountouzis and Anthi Pashi have also been confirmed as participants, performing their own entries "Island of Love" and "You Gotta Go".[9]

On 29 January a there was a change in the line-up of the final: Nasos Lambrianides and Melis Konstantinou withdrew their song "Nothing Is Real" from the contest in order to avoid splitting votes between it and their other song, "Life Looks Better in Spring". The withdrawn song was replaced by "Waiting", written by Christodoulos Charalambides and Andreas Economides.[10] On 3 February the song "Play", composed by Milena Staneva and performed by Deep Zone, the Bulgarian entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, was disqualified after the song was found on file sharing websites and video website YouTube, breaching the rules of the Cypriot national final. The song was not replaced, leaving just nine songs left in the contest.[11]
