"Courageous" was released as the lead single from Casting Crowns' 2011 album Come to the Well. The song has thus far peaked at No. 1 on the Hot Christian Songs chart, No. 2 on the Hot Christian AC chart, and No. 4 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.

"Courageous" is a song with a length of three minutes and fifty-nine seconds.[2] It is set in common time and the key of F♯ minor, with a tempo of 84 beats per minute, and has a vocal range spanning from A3-F♯5.[3] The song is musically a soft rock song,[4] with influences from adult contemporary and alternative CCM.[3] "Courageous" features a guitar riff that has been described as 'muscular',[5] and the song itself been described as an 'anthem'.[4]
"Courageous" is a call for men to be better fathers and spiritual leaders,[4] and to live bold and uncompromising lives in their faith.[6] The bridge of the song quotes from the Book of Micah, calling the listener to "Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God".[5][6]
